Dear Parents,
Our Word Study begins this week! Each Monday your son/daughter will receive
their sort for the week. Each sort emphasizes a specific spelling concept or
pattern. The students will be bringing the sort home each week to help them
practice at home, as well as, in school. Listed below are a few activities
to help your child practice their words.
• Cut and Sort - After cutting out your words from the sort, highlight
the helper words and the pattern letters. Sort them in front of you and have
a parent check.
• ABC Order - Sort your words according to pattern. Then, put the
words in alphabetical order within their sorts.
• Reversed Words – Sort your words according to the patter and then
write the word in alphabetical order – backwards.
• Rainbow Words – Write each of your words in three colors
• Cheer Your Words – Pretend you are a cheerleader and call out the
letters as you spell each word.
• Backwards Words – Write your words forwards, then backwards.
• Picture Words – Draw a picture and write your words in the picture.
• Sentences - Write sentences using your words. Challenge yourself; how
many words can you use in a meaningful sentence?
• Pyramid Words – Write your words adding or subtracting 1 letter at a
time. The result will be a pyramid shape of words.
• Ransom Words – Write your words by cutting out letters from a
newspaper or magazine and gluing them onto a piece of paper.
• Words-in-Words – Write your words and then write at least 2 words
made from each.
• Magazine Words – Use an old magazine or newspaper and find your
words. Cut them out and glue them onto a piece of paper.
• Story Words – Write a short story using all of your words.
• 30 Second Words – Write a TV commercial using all of the words from
your list.
Please help your child practice their words each week. As always,
please feel free to contact us should you have any questions. Thank you for
all you do.
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Teachers
