You can practice by going to my links page and scrolling
down to FunBrain and playing multiplication baseball.
You can also play Uno by using addition, subtraction, multiplication
and division skills. We will be having a multiplication facts

the constellations of the Native Americans.
When the weather cooperates you will be able to locate the Fall
Square of Pegasus. I told everyone to look for the bright spot in
the southeastern sky. This is the planet Jupiter. Just behind
Jupiter you should see the square of Pegasus. In front of Jupiter
you will see Pisces, the Fish. A "V" shaped constellation.

PUT A CAP ON NAME CALLING.. Wear your cap on Tuesday October 20th.

MATH: This week we begin Unit 3. We will review "What's My Rule"
function problems. We will also be working with the multiplication
and division facts. Your child needs to know these facts.
We will be playing a number of math games to reinforce the
facts. I will also be quizzing everyone on the facts.(Hint, Hint)
We have already completed two Mad Minutes. (30 problems in
one minute). Please practice your facts at home.
If you go to my links page and click on FunBrain you can play
multiplication baseball to practice the facts. You can also
play the game Uno using the multiplication facts. For example:
the card is a red 6. You don't have any red cards, wilds, or a
6 of another color. You don't want to have to draw cards. If
you can make six using multiplication you can do this during the game.
For example: Your cards are a 3,2,1,7,0,8 and 4. You can put down
       the 3, 2, 1, and 0. 3 times 2 equals 6 times 1 equals 6 plus 0
equals six. You just put down 4 cards instead of one card.
       Homework for tonight:
       1. Unit 2 test on Friday.
       2. Study Link page 45. Also from your journal cut-out fact triangles
found on Activity sheets 1-4. Put your initials on them.
Place them in the envelope. We need them in class tomorrow.

SCIENCE: This week we begin the Spring Sky. Students will be role playing
the legends and visiting the planetrium to identify the spring
constellations. Hopefully the sky will be clear so you can
get outside to view the constellations of the fall sky in the
early evening. Students all know where to look in the sky
for the Circumpolar, Fall and Winter constellations.
This morning at 5:00 AM I saw Orion,The Hunter, Gemini, The
          Twins, and the Winter Triangle.
Homework for tonight: Last moon observation tonight.
          Bring project in tomorrow.

SOCIAL STUDIES: This week students will be working in their cooperative
groups to begin creating/designing/decorating their United States
Landform Travel Poster. Towards the end of the week each group
will present their groups finished poster. Groups will also
share with the rest of the class a little about their landform
           region.

 Monday October 5, 2009

MATH: This week we will be working on collecting class data to
interpret and graph. We will be using the terms Maximum, Minimum,
Range, Mode, and Median. Students will interpret their data
to determine the values for each of the above terms. We will
also work on addition of multidigit numbers. I will be showing
a number of different methods. I would like students to choose
the method that they feel comfortable working with. We will
also have a mad minute reviewing the multiplication facts through
the fives. Please review the multiplication fatcs with your
child at home. You can play Uno using multiplication, or
Multiplication Baseball.( This can be found on the website
       Funbrain.com)
For homework tonight: Study Link page 27.

SCIENCE: This week we continue to study the night sky. We will be
studying the Winter Sky this week. Students will be role playing
the legend of the winter sky. We will also be visiting the planetarium
to locate these constellations. Please try to spend a few minutes each
night outside with your child to explore the night sky. Ask your
child to locate some of these constellations for you.
       For homework tonight:
       1. Astronomy journal page 43.
       2. Moon Project daily observation. Your child will be making a
daily moon observation. I have given everyone a large sheet
of white drawing paper folded into eight squares on each side.
Each day your child will record in one of the squares, The Date,
The Time (including am or pm), Sky Conditions (clear, cloudy, rainy
etc.) and then Draw a picture of the moon and what they see.
Since this is a project it will be worth 100 points. Everyone
received 5 points today for copying my observation from last night.
I did tell everyone that they do not have to observe the moon at
the same time each day. If you see the moon in the morning you
can make your observation then. I also told everyone that if it
is bedtime and you did not see the moon ask mom or dad to make the
observation and share it with you. I did tell everyone that if they
can't see the moon from their yard, ask mom and dad to take a short
walk with you to a better viewing location.

SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will be finishing up Chapter 1. (Hint: I will be
announcing the date for the Chapter 1 test later this week.)
We will begin Chapter 2 which deals with Regions and Resources.
We will begin by focusing on the regions of the United States.
Students will be working in cooperative groups to gather
information on a specific region of the USA. Each group will
then make a presentation to their classmates on their findings.
          For homework: Due Wednesday
Please label the map of the United States with the abbreviations
for each state. You can use textbook page 29 for help. You can
also use your homework planner page 101.

Enjoy the evening.. Happy stars and moon watching.

MATH: This week we will begin Unit 2. We will focus on place value
(reading and writing large numbers to the hundred millions place
value). We will also conduct a math experiment that involves
organizing and displaying data. Students will also be using the
terms maximum, minimum, range, mode, median, and mean as they relate
to the data that we collect.
        Homework:

SCIENCE: This week we will be focusing on the Fall Sky. Students will
be role playing the legends of the Fall Sky. We will also be
learning the star patterns for these constellations as well.
Today everyone received a Star Chart of the Northern Sky.
We began by identifying the constellations of the Fall Sky
Both in star pattern and location. This sheet will help your
child locate the night time constellations. We will also be visiting
the planetarium to view these constellations.
         Homework: Free night.
Later in the week I will be asking the students to spend a few
minutes each night weather permitting to view the night sky.

SKY ALERT: If the weather is good, look for the moon. You will
see a very bright star next to the moon. It is not a star but
the planet Jupiter. If you have binoculars or a telescope use them
         to get a closer look.

SOCIAL
STUDIES: This week we will be discussing the Waterways of New Jersey
and how people use them. There will be many vocabulary words in
this unit. Students will be writing these words and the
definitions in their notebooks. We will also look at using maps
to determine land elevation. We will finish the week off by
          talking about climate and weather.
Homework: Worksheet “Many Landforms”. You will need your textbook
