During May our Readers will continue to learn how to look at the pictures and talk about the story, and they will use the pictures to retell the story. We will review nonfiction, and the students will learn how to read a nonfiction book to learn 3 new facts. We will also focus on our reading strategies such as making connections, inferring, predicting, and summarizing.

During Writer's Workshop we will work on writing an All About Book using a science topic. The students will share facts to show all they know about a topic. They will use a diagram with labels to illustrate their books. They will learn how to use comparative words in their writing, add details, and use a glossary to highlight the special vocabulary of their topic. We will also continue to use a revising checklist as they move towards publishing their books.

In Math we will continue counting from 1-100, skip counting by 10's, 5's, and 2's, and counting back from 20-0. This month we will work on addition and subtraction, learning math facts up to five, understanding the rules of a function machine, and number sequencing. We will also continue to use the Learning Lab weekly to practice our skills.

During Social Studies we will begin to explore and use maps. In Science we will continue to study trees. We will focus on the spring tree and discuss the characteristics of spring. We will watch our class tree for signs of change throughout the season. We will continue to talk about the basic needs of trees. We will also explore and learn about shadows.
