Writers Workshop

Writers Workshop consists of a mini-lesson targeting specific needs. Writers Workshop benefits students on every end of the spectrum through individualized
instruction. This program provides opportunities for each student to have individualized instruction, allowing each child to improve and grow as writers at his or her own pace and ability. This allows me to meet with each student one-on-one during the course of our specific writing
units.  “Writers” are sent to put pencil to paper during student writing time.

      popcorncart.gifMini-Lessons

Writer's workshop begins with a 5 to 15-minute mini  lesson. During these brief sessions the teacher addresses writers' needs. These mini lessons are developed to introduce new genres of writing or might be necessary to address specific things the teacher has noticed in students' writing. Mini-lessons are conducted as a whole group.

Writing Genre Units popcorncart.gif

In our classroom, writing is taught through genres. This
helps students understand the different types of writing and helps expose
students to a variety of purposes for writing so that each child can discover
his or her own preference.

Some of our writing genre units will include the following:

·       Silly Stories
·       Personal Narratives
·       Non Fiction Reports
·       How To Articles
·       Friendly Letters to Pen Pals
·       Persuasive Writing
·       Fairy Tales

SIX +1 TRAITS
  • Ideas
  • Organization
  • Conventions
  • Voice
  • Sentence Fluency
  • Word Choice
The 4 Square Writing Method will also be incorporated into all units to help with the prewriting (planning) or ideas and organization.

What ARE the traits and how are they used in our writing?
It's the language, the shared vocabulary that adds such a rich component to enhance our teaching and assessing of student writing. The traits help children understand what is working well and what needs to be improved in their writing. The traits give teachers a focus for their writing instruction. The traits provide a common language for talking about and celebrating writing.
