Weekly
Spelling Assignments
Each full week of school students will be working on developing spelling
proficiency of the words they commonly misspell or the words they are working
on incorporating into their written and spoken language. In addition,
students will be actively engage in a word work program designed to help
students to identify spelling patterns, understand word roots, suffixes, and
prefixes and develop a higher level of vocabulary use. Each
student will create a unique individual spelling list to be studied during the
week.
During class on the Monday of each full week students search for words in
their work that have been identified as misspelled and add them to their
individual list of words to learn. After the first marking
period, students will be expected to do this over the weekend as homework and
come prepared to school on Monday morning with their list. Students
may also add words from the class Word Wall that they would like to be
proficient at spelling as they use these new words in their writing.
Additionally, as students find words in their reading that they find
interesting or strong words they may add to their words to learn section of
their Word Work Notebook. The objective of locating individual words is to
find words that students will use in their writing, speaking, and find while
reading. Words that are too scientific or obscure will not be
accepted as weekly words. Students collaborate with another student to
check the spelling of each chosen word and double check that the word is
correctly spelled on their study sheets. A hand held spell checker/ thesaurus
is handy to have in class to help correctly spell the word initially.
We will also be adding words to our weekly spelling list we work on during the
words our way word work each week.
On Friday students will be tested on the 5 words they choose at the beginning
of the week to study as well as 5 randomly pick words from the weekly Words
Our Way list students worked on each day. As a
result, students will be tested on a total of 10 words, 5 words they choose
and 5 words from their weekly word work.
Friday’s Spelling Test includes not only spelling ten words correctly but
using each word correctly in a sentence. A spelling grade as well as a
vocabulary grade is given for each part of the test. Words
that are not spelled correctly are placed on the next weeks spelling list
until students are able to correctly spell the word.
