Weekly Word Study

MONDAY: Practice Sorting
•	Take your words out of the plastic bag.
•	Arrange your words according to the sort.
•	Next, write the words in sorts in your spelling notebook.
•	After you have written all the words in sorts, check over the words.
Look for patterns and say
        the words aloud quietly.

TUESDAY: Partner Sorting
•	Today you will be working with your spelling partner.
•	Take out your words and place them face down on your desk.
•	You or your partner will choose a word.
•	Tell your partner the word, but don’t show it to them.
•	Have your partner write the word in the correct column in his/her
notebook.
•	Check to see that your partner spelled the word correctly and make
sure your partner placed the
        word in the correct column.
•	Take turns saying and writing words in sorts until your teacher tells
you to stop.

WEDNESDAY: Word Wall

THURSDAY: Speed Sort

FRIDAY: Time to Assess
•	Clear your desk.
•	Get a sheet of paper and a pencil.
•	Practice spelling your words until we are all ready to begin.

IF YOU FINISH EARLY: You may…
•	Write a sentence using one of your words.
•	Write a short story that uses several of your words.
•	Use a dictionary to look up the meaning of any unfamiliar words, and
record their definitions in
        your notebook.
•	Use a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms for one or more of your
words, and record
        them in your notebook.

FRIDAY HOMEWORK:
•	You will receive your new sorts for the week. Look at the words. What
sorts are you working with
        this week?
•	Highlight each sort heading and the bolded word for each sort.
•	Choose a marker or crayon and make one line through each column.
•	Next, cut out the words.
•	Place your words in the baggie when finished.
