Dear Student and Family,
Hello, my name is Agnes Walus and I am delighted to welcome you and
your child to our 6th grade Social Studies class. We have a great year ahead
of us. Sixth grade is a big year in your child’s school career. I am looking
forward to getting to know you and your families and enjoying an exciting
year together.
It is my goal that your child’s sixth grade experience will be
filled with personal growth as a thinker and as a learner. We will work
together to build an atmosphere of community and tolerance so that each
child’s strengths are enhanced and differences are embraced. During the
school year we will be exploring and building an appreciation for the
cultures of the following ancient civilizations: Mesopotamia, Egypt, India,
China, Greece and Rome. Together we will explore the cultures and the
contributions of these lands as we explore the similarities and differences
between the people of the past and the people of the present. Additionally,
we will have a variety of projects created to enhance your child's
understanding of the curriculum.
It is important to come to class prepared with a positive attitude
and the necessary supplies. Class preparation includes: an agenda, a binder
with 5 dividers, the unit packet, the homework, a folder, pens, pencils and
a highlighter. Coming to class prepared with the necessary materials will
help your child reach his/her highest potential.
My grading policy is broken down as follows: 50% tests and projects,
20% quizzes and class work, 15% homework, and 15% participation. Students
will be expected to record the homework at the beginning of class and
current assignments are posted on Homework Hotline. Your child’s homework
grade is reduced each day an assignment is turned in late.
Please do not hesitate to contact me via email (awalus@ebnet.org) or
leave a voice message in my school mail box, ext. 4378, at any point
throughout the school year. There is also a quick and easy way for you to
know more about what is going on in our classroom by visiting the class web
page: www.teacherweb.com/NJ/Hammarskjoldmiddleschool/awalus. On the web
page, you will be able to learn more about class news and events, check
homework, find resources, and much more.
I am excited to work with you and your child to support and enrich
your child’s academic growth. Thank you for your cooperation and support.
Sincerely,
Ms. Agnieszka (Agnes) Walus
