week of February 13-17
Reading- On Monday I will introduce our new skill, (fact/opinion)vocab
and genre (expository) for the week. There will be HW on Monday night working
with the new vocab, wb.p. 155. There will also be HW on Tuesday night
Wb.p. 159/ Our main story this week is entitled, Heroes in a Time of Need".
Our Test this week will be on Thursday, it will be 10 Q drawn from the story
along with vocab.
Spelling- On Monday we will have our pretest of our new words, they are all
homographs. There will be HW Wb.p. 104. There will also be practice HW on
Wednesday, Wb.p. 106. The weekly test will be on Friday.
Math- Due to some students continuing to struggle with division of fractions
I have pushed the test back 2 days to Friday. I spent time this past Friday
reviewing trouble spots encountered by a few on the open book quiz from last
Wednesday. I will also have a review after school on Wednesday this week and
a review in class this Thursday. Please study and ask questions in class
BEFORE test day.
Lang Arts-
GR- We will be working on verbs-simple tenses and subject verb agreement.
(approx. pgs 396-397 txtbk, wb pgs 68,69.
WR- We will continue working on descriptive writing. We will also be
writing Valentine's Day acrostic poetry.
Science- On Monday we will watch a DVD on the smartboard about volcanoes.
We will begin the chapter learning about the layers of the Earth and about
the forces behind earthquakes and volcanoes. On Friday we will make our
group volcanoes to give them time to air dry over the long weekend. ***Please

Religion-
This week we will begin work on chapter 14 , learn about the real legend
behind St. Valentine and do some prep for our ACRE test in Religion which
will be next week on hursday. This is not a test they can study for. It is
given to all 5th and 8th grade students both in Catholic school and in the
CCD program. Just a reminder that we are scheduled to have the visiting
nurse here at the
end of the month for the puberty program. Please, Mom and Dad if you haven't
had this chat with your child please make a little time between now and then
to do so. It is important that you be the primary teacher of this sensitive
material. Feel free to consult the parent magazine insert that comes with
the Family Life book if you feel unsure just how much or little to discuss.
Always keep in mind that the program is presented in guideline with the
teachings of the Catholic Church .
Social Studies- The students should be preparing for their next test which
will be on Thursday. It is on Unit 2 lessons 5,6,7.
