Reading Strategies

"Good Readers" think and use strategies while they are reading. In class I
have been introducing new ways to think while reading. Please encourage your
reader to try different strategies while reading.

Reading Strategies

•	PREDICT: Before and during reading, think about upcoming events.

•	QUESTION: Question the text, author & character.

•	CLARIFY: Write down the words that are difficult to define or pronounce.

•	SUMMARIZE: Write down the main events.

•	VISUALIZE: Draw the picture formed in your mind.

•	CONNECT: Write down ways in which the text reminds you of something.

•	REACT: Write feelings or reactions to the text.

1. Look at the pictures

2. Look at the first letter and get your mouth
ready.

3. Say "blank" and think about the words that
would makes sense. (Context Clues)

4. Look for word chunks you know.

5. Look for small words inside big words.

6. Look for special word endings or
beginnings.

7. Check for a rhyming pattern.

8. Check for a repeating pattern.

The children should also be trying to visualize, make connections, and attempting to retell stories that
they are reading.
