Announcements

                               Welcome to 3rd Grade!

Dear Parents,
Conference slips have been sent home with a specified date and time for
our parent/teacher conference. Please remember to send these slips back
with your child as soon as possible so that I can finalize our schedules.
I encourage you to make the best effort to meet with me during
conference time (from Monday, 10/20- Thursday, 10/23). It is so important
that we discuss your child's progress either in person or over the phone. I
will do my best to accomodate you with conference times that work well with
your personal schedules.

Also, UNIT 1 MATH TESTS have been sent home and must be SIGNED and
RETURNED immediately. Thank you for your cooperation!

Please check the October calendar that was sent home for dates and times
of club meetings. Clubs begin this week.

Please continue practicing word sorts daily with your third
grader. The best way to learn our weekly words is to sort them based on
specific spelling patterns and sounds. Play a game with your child by
pulling out a word from the bag, reading it aloud without showing it, and
challenging him or her to write the word correctly under the helper word
with the matching spelling pattern and sound. Quizzes will be every
Friday.
In Reader's Workshop this week, we are reading humorous short
stories from the book The Stories Julian Tells by Ann Cameron. We will be
introducing our active reading strategies, including visualizing and making
connections.

In Math, we are beginning Unit 2--Addition and Subtraction with
Whole Numbers. Please have your child review basic addition and subtraction
facts using their fact triangles. We will be working on fact families, fact
extensions, patterns, and number stories.

Our third grade scientists are enjoying our unit on "Rocks and
Minerals." This week students will continue working on their Field Guides,
as they explore the properties of twelve
different minerals, including their textures, smells, and streak
colors.
Questions? Concerns? Please feel free to send in a note with
your child or send me an e-mail at lparis@ebnet.org!
                                                        Yours in education,
                                                          Miss Paris ;-)
