Nov. 2011

With all instruments and supplies finally delivered, we're underway with the
basics of how to grip the bow and use it to produce a clear sound on each
string. Students are learning how to read and finger notes on the D string.
I assign "written assignments" of labeling notes with the correct letter names
to help them learn how to read notes.

When your child brings home his/her instrument, make sure s/he always puts it
away in the case with the latches/zippers closed after practicing. Do not let
siblings try it; that's how to prevent unnecessary repairs. Please do not try
to tune a string yourself unless you've played a string instrument. If a
string breaks (which is a natural occurrence), a new one can be bought from
and installed by me according to the prices on The Music Shop website. Please
send cash only.

Help your child to set up the music stand so that it is at eye level when s/he
is standing (sitting for cellists). In the early weeks it's a good idea for
your child to practice on a rug or with the violin/viola over a bed or sofa as
they learn how to hold it.

Please monitor their practice by asking to sign the practice record the day
before your child's lesson. Asking your child to play a piece or two is
always a great way to show him or her that you are the best audience!

I hope families of fifth grade parents enjoyed the mini-recitals your child
gave over the Thanksgiving break. The children and I appreciate the positive
comments you wrote in response to their performances. We are also busy
preparing for the 5th grade winter concerts. See your particular school's
page for the date and
time.

Important Reminders:

District Orchestra, our 10-week optional (and free) after-school orchestra
starting in late January will be on:

Mondays at 3:45-4:45 for 5th graders
Tuesdays at 3:45-4:45 for 4th graders

More information about this important strings experience, including a
registration form and carpool list, will come to you shortly. Please try to
keep these days free of other activities so your child may participate in our
District Orchestra.

Check your school's site for concert information. 5th graders perform in the
winter and spring concerts. 4th graders perform in the spring concert, but
they also give a classroom concert to children in the primary grades to give
them their first performance experience.

Please feel free to contact me about any question relating to your child's
experience in my classes or about your child's instrument. My email is
lgoldstein@ebnet.org. You can also telephone me at 732-613-6700x4055.

It's been a great year with each and every one of your young musicians!
