To be prepared for a strings class, your child should bring to 
school:

the instrument with sponge shoulder rest for violinists/violists
the instrument with rock-stop for cellists
music folder with lesson schedule, signed practice record, book, handouts
pencil
soft cloth for dusting off rosin
spare D string/spare A string
for at-home practice: a music stand
