| Answering Open Ended Questions:
The students have learned to use the word RACE to help them remember how to
answer open ended questions. They should answer the open-ended prompts this
way each month.
R - Restate the question in a complete sentence. Example: Do you think
children should be allowed to watch as much television as they want to? The
students will restate by saying, Children should (or shouldn't) be allowed
to watch as much television as they want to.
A - Answer. Students should answer each bullet and together should have at
least three details.
C - Connection. Students should make a connection (text to self, text to
text, or text to world) to the topic and tell how it relates.
E - Ending. Students wrap up their paragraph with an ending sentence
restating the main idea. Example: As you can see, there are many reasons why
children should not be allowed to watch as much television as they want.
The following is an example of an open-ended question that was answered
using RACE.
Prompt: Playing games can be a lot of fun. If you could play a game all day
what would you play?
RESTATE: If I could play a game all day, I would play a game that I really
liked.
ANSWER (with 3 details): I would play my favorite game, kickball. I like
kickball because it’s a game I get to play with my friends. It’s almost like
soccer and baseball combined, and those are my two favorite sports! Another
reason why I would play kickball all day is that I play it all of the time
during recess, so I have a lot of practice and I’m really able to play the
game well.
Connection: This reminds me of a time when I went to see a Major League
Soccer game. I am reminded of this experience because as I watched the
soccer players run around the field and have fun, I realized that it must be
really great to be a professional sports player. Professional sports players
are able to play their favorite game all day, everyday!
Ending: As you can see, playing a game all day would be a lot of fun. If I
had the chance to play a game all day, it would definitely be soccer!
