I have been teaching music at Midland School since 1974. For over thirty
years I have taken great pleasure in encouraging the students at Midland to
express themselves through singing, movement, playing instruments, and
listening. In addition to teaching all of the children at Midland grades PK
through 8, I am also the Chorus director. Chorus is a voluntary club that
meets after school and performs in two programs a year and at the eighth
grade graduation in June. I hold a BA degree in music education from Jersey
City State College and a MA degree in music education from NJCU.
Music Department Philosophy:
The music department is dedicated to teaching children through the use of
music. The goal of the music department is to provide the world with human
beings that appreciate music and understand what it takes to create that
music. Students in the music program are given the opportunity to express
themselves through study and participation in several performing groups at
Midland School.
Studies have shown that students who participate in school music programs
consistently score higher on standardized tests. In addition to this
benefit, students learn to work together cooperatively, they learn self
discipline from daily practice and they enjoy an increase in self-esteem from
successfully participating in performance groups.
General Music PK-8:
All students have General Music as part of their academic course work at
Midland School. In the primary grades the students meet once a week for a
forty-minute period with the vocal music specialist Mrs. Barbara Weiner.
Starting in grade three the students meet twice a week for half of the school
year and then switch to art for the other half of the year. Students in grade
six, seven and eight have music every day for one marking period each year.
Midland School Choral Groups:
All students in grades 4 through 8 are welcome to join our extra-curricular
choral groups that meet after school. Boys Chorus meets on Tuesday
afternoons from 2:50 until 3:45 and Girls Chorus meets on Wednesday
afternoons from 2:50 until 3:45. We also have a Mixed Chorus that is a
combination of the Boys and Girls groups.
The Chorus participates in two main performances each year: The Holiday
Concert in December and The Spring Concert or biannual Spring Musical. They
also sing at the eighth grade graduation each year in June. In
addition to the two concerts, the Chorus participates in community events and
takes trips to entertain the Senior Citizens of Rochelle Park and the
patients in the local nursing home every December.
