Working Together
I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experiences in school. I give homework for several reasons: it reinforces what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons and tests, extends and generalizes concepts, teaches responsibility and helps students develop positive study habits. Students need our help in becoming successful in school. They need both you and myself to help them adapt to new grade level skills and workload. Please work with me to keep them on track and prepared.
I will assign homework Monday through Thursday nights.
Generally, there will be math, spelling and at times, writing each night. Occasionally, there will be content area work. Homework is clearly posted each day on the board (and on my website) and students will have ample time to copy it. Students are not exempt from copying down their assignments in their agenda books just because it is on the website. Tests will generally be posted three days prior.
I expect students to do their best job on all assignments. I expect it to be neat. I expect an attempt at problems not understood. I expect students to do their work on their own and ask for help when they have given their best effort. If books or papers are left in school, or if the assignment was not written down, I expect an attempt at some practice similar to the assignment. Please call your one of your homework buddies given to you at the beginning of the year for some assistance.
Parents are Partners
I expect parents to oversee homework each night. Parents should assist in making sure the correct assignment was fulfilled (by cross checking the assignment with the homework/ agenda book); making sure the directions were followed and the work was completed. Parents should remind students to correct anything that stands out as completely wrong. *I ask that parents please sign the agenda book each night.
All homework and projects will be checked in school. Each Friday, look in the agenda book for the up coming week’s test and or project due schedule.
Any unfinished class work is homework. If a student is absent, please find out what important class work was missed so it can be caught up. Homework in a parent’s or sibling’s handwriting will not be accepted without prior communication to justify the reason.
If students are out sick and you wish to have their homework assignments, the best way to assure that I will get the message in time to prepare it to go home, is to call my voice mail by 8:30 AM or the office by 10:00 AM. Homework will not be sent home with another student unless it was approved by that student’s parents.
If students choose not to do their homework, they also choose to lose certain privileges. If the student misses a homework assignment, it must be turned in the next day. If there is a legitimate reason why a student is unable to do the homework, parents must send in a note explaining. If you need an extension on any homework or class work assignments because of illness or family emergencies, please notify me. If I don't hear from you, tests and assignments will be given and expected as scheduled.
If a student has 5 incomplete or missed homework assignments, it will be noted on the report card as a weakness. There will be no excuses accepted for incomplete (2 or more problems) or missed assignments. (Ex. “I did it but I left it home.”)
In some instances of reward, homework passes are given. On the day the assignment due, students must have either the pass or the work.
Most night’s homework should not take more than 45 minutes. If it is taking longer and you see it as a problem, please call me and we can work out the problem together. *This does not include studying for tests, independent reading or preparing long range projects.
Please sign and return the bottom. This action just states that you have been made aware of my policy.
