Thank You Partners in Learning for all your literacy support!
Many of your children did a GREAT job working   on our past websites these past months-www.starfall.com , www.spellingcity.com, www.pbskids.com , www.storylineonline.net, and www.benchmarkuniverse.com.
Please continue to have your child log on to these useful literacy websites often as well.
The weekends are a great time to unwind and complete reading activities online as well.
The above websites offer critical reading practice for your child to work on important reading skills( ie: letter /sound association, spelling) and language arts activities such as (i.e.:sequencing,story elements, modeling oral reading fluency) and more! These web sites offer endless activites to help support our readers and writers to meet with success.
Upon completion of reading (five or six) stories online  your child will have the option to choose a small prize from our class prize box!
Looking forward to viewing the titles of the stories your child has read on this online site in the months of (April and May) via your emails.Noting the titles, helps me to identify your child's reading interests, as well as seek out other texts pertaining to topics your child is passionate about.

Ask me About...
This section of my webpage will reflect the State Core Curriculum Standards that have been taught in Language Arts/ Literacy "Book Clubs" Grades Kindergarten to Grade Four. Each grade level is instructed on the following specific skills at their independent and instructional levels.
The items listed below are concepts, strategies, and skills modeled during our reading and writing  lessons thus far this school year:
WORD WORK and WORD STUDY:phonics skills, analyzing specific spelling patterns ,and writing high- use words.
STORY ELEMENTS TO BUILD COMPREHENSION SKILLS:We specifically worked on character ( WHO?)and setting ( where? and when?).
READING STRATEGIES- we worked on specific strategies on what to do when you encounter  a tricky word.

  • WRITING: We worked on writing about "Small Moments" ( personal narratives) in our lives as well as Expository writing pieces ( Non- Fiction /working on "How To "writing pieces.
  • In texts, we learned how to identify the problem or conflict in a story and then identify the solutions/resolution to the conflicts.
  • We learned how to   break up "tricky" words into manageable parts- the "chunking" strategy (ex.compound words).

  • We learned new vocabulary terms and their meanings/definitions.

  •  We learned  synonyms (words that mean the same thing or close to the same thing).

  •  We learned antonyms ( words that mean the opposite).

  • We learned about prefixes that come at the beginning of words( un, pre, re) and their meanings.

  • We learned how to retell a story using "time order sequence words" ( first, next, then ,and last or finally)when recalling story events. This helps us remember what we read to build comprehension skills.

  • We learned "Steps in a Process".This is an important skill that is modeled in order to sequence important events/details.

  • We have begun "Old Time Classics".This month we will be learning about fables and folktales and the lessons/ morals learned. We are working on making connections and reflecting on the reason the author wrote the text.

  • In "Word Study"- (Vocabulary Skills), we will be learning all about Homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and are spelled differently.Have your child try to think of some Homophones as they read stories and identify the meaning of thoses words. (i.e.pear, pair, meet, meat and there are many more!)

  • -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  • The Month of April :We are currently working on a focus strategy pertaining to the "Main Idea/Theme" (the BIG picture) of the story and recalling and retelling important story details.Lessons also include "drawing conclusions" based on clues in the text.We are also working on reviewing prefixes and introducing suffixes for Word Work.An important strategy is to be sure to read to the END of the word in order to pronounce it properly."Switching the vowel sound" from short to long also helps to decode an unfamiliar word.

                                                           Happy Reading!
