In reading, your child has been utilizing strategies and skills to help them understand the stories and the characters involved better. We have been working on locating cause and effect relationships and making inferences/drawing conclusions. Now we are moving on to the skill of compare and contrast (taking notice of how objects, characters and stories can be similar and different from one another).
**When your child reads at home, please guide them in using these skills and strategies to enable them to have deeper comprehension of the texts in which they are reading**
We have begun reading our second novel of the year entitled Stone Fox.
This is a heart-felt story about friendship and determination. After we finish reading a chapter, the students and I are summarizing it by using SWBST (described below). At the completion of the novel, your children will have a summarized booklet of the story to share with you at home.
Each letter (SWBST) corresponds with a finger on your hand.
(S-thumb, W- index, B-middle, S-ring, T-pinky)
Please encourage this strategy at home when your child is independently reading (especially when reading chapter books) so they can make connections between events in the chapters.
We have also been continuing to be "word wizards"!
Here are the words we have been focusing on:
mended, determined, explanation, concern, mature
Ask your child to show you the gesture we learned to accompany the meanings of these new words!
We just finished Unit 6 in math. In Unit 7, your child will be learning about patterns and rules. We will be building our mental addition stategies and describing patterns in skip counting. We will also be looking at tables, line plots, and bar graphs using real-life data.
Don't forget to play the "Fact Dash" game to learn facts with automaticity to the sum of 20.
