Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week we introduced a new Author of the Month, Paulette Bourgeois. She created the character Franklin. Your child has learned many interesting facts about her. Ask him/her about Paulette Bourgeois this weekend. We enjoyed
reading Franklin Goes to School, Franklin Wants a Pet and her first book published, Franklin in the Dark. We have used these stories to reinforce our reading strategies. Next week we will be focusing on making connections and
will read the story Franklin’s Blanket, which is about the character’s security blanket. Is there something that your child keeps that has special meaning to them? If so, please allow your child to bring in that item to school on Monday. We would like to use that special item to help make a connection to the story Franklin’s Blanket.

Thank you! Enjoy the weekend!

Happy Monday!

This week your child will continue working on consonant blends. Unlike the digraph, where the two letters make one sound, each sound of a blend is heard, but the sounds are blended together.
We will introduce a few of the three-letter blends this week.
You may have noticed that I do not send home “Words of the Week.” This is because the children master the sounds and are able to spell multiple words with the sound of the week. We want them to apply the sound in their daily writing, as opposed to simply memorizing it.

sm(smash)     spl(split)     st(stop)            sc(scam)        squ(squid)

At home activity: Make flash cards

*On the front, write the blend
*On the back, write the word
*Have your child pronounce the consonant blends from the flash cards and then dictate the words.

Decodable Sentences for Dictation and Reading: (Red words are underlined)

Hand Jim a slab for the top of the bench.

Jim will be glad if you grill the lunch.

Grip the strap and do not let it drop.

Do not drop the trash on the grass.

Your children have been working hard each and every day. They are doing a wonderful job building their
fluency and writing in their journals. This week they will continue to work on adding onto ten in Math. We have plenty of fun activities planned using base-ten blocks, links, and the smart board to help reinforce this concept.

Our “Author of the Month” for February is Paulette Bourgeois. The students enjoy reading about Franklin and
all of his adventures. This week we will be working on the reading strategy, Making Connections when reading Franklin’s Blanket and Finders Keepers for Franklin.  (Thank you for having your child bring in an item special to them today. We were able to demonstrate how to make connections when reading the story, Franklin’s Blanket.)

Last week we introduced nouns to the class and they worked in groups to create noun posters. They had a blast searching for nouns in magazines, cutting them out and pasting them onto their team poster. Each team presented their poster to the class. This week we will be doing the same activity with verbs. We are looking forward to the team presentations of their verb posters.
