ASI students should read to a parent every day from a book that is easy for
the student to read. ASI students should be read to by a parent or other
adult every day, from a book that has been selected by the student. This
book may be too difficult for the child to read him/herself. Notice and
discuss interesting words in reading passages.
Other Language Arts Literacy ideas:
-Start a family journal. Adults and children add entries about changing
seasons, favorite family meals or activities, pet behavior. Once a week,
read the journal entries aloud after dinner.
- Write a recipe. After you have written a couple of recipes, try writing a
silly recipe (dandelion tacos, sweatshirt stew).
-Parents and children could e-mail each other.
-During car trips, make a list of words that start with the letters you see
on car license plates that pass by. Who can come up with the longest list of
words, or the "fanciest" word?
-Use the newspaper or magazines. Cut up several pictures and their captions
separately. Mix them up, then try to match them up again.
-Use newspapers or magazines to find the names of 5-10 countries, states and
cities in headlinles. Copy the names onto index cards and then arrage in
alphabetical order.
