How often do students visit the library?
All classed are scheduled once a week for a 20 minute
book return/borrowing period.
Instructional classes will be scheduled individually with your child's teacher
and will involve team teaching based on topics being covered in the classroom.
I will tie in library/research/technology lessons during our collaboration.
What do lessons cover?
Lessons may include storytelling, computers, or a hands-on activity.
Kindergarteners learn responsibility and how to care for their books.
In the spring, they are introduced to using two hands on a keyboard
through Type to Learn, Jr.
First Graders focus on books that they can read themselves and are introduced
to Beginning Readers and the nonfiction section and
beginning fact finding for research. In computers, they review the keyboard,
and utilize several programs that reinforce concepts learned in the classroom.
Second and Third Graders focus on library organization, learn to find books
independently by using OPAC and call numbers, internet safety,
and practice research skills. They also begin Type to Learn 3,
which focuses on the use of proper fingering on the keyboard.
How many books may a student borrow?
All students borrow one book per week.
Our responsibility incentive program encourages students to earn a
coupon to borrow an extra book or magazine on Gold Star Day once a month
by returning all their books on time.
What if a child forgets his book on library day?
All students are scheduled for book borrowing on the same day each week
in order to help them remember to return their library book on time
and develop a sense of responsibility. Each child has a Responsibility Certificate
to track their returns and motivate them to remember their books on time.
If a child is absent on library day or forgets his book,
he will not be able to borrow another book until ALL previously
borrowed books are returned. I prefer that parents not make a special trip
to bring forgotten books to school. Children will learn best
if they are held responsible.
Is there a fine for late books?
There is no fine for books returned late. However, if a book is lost,
damaged, or simply not returned for a period of four weeks or longer,
a replacement fee is charged.
For a book less than a year old, the fee is the original cost.
For a hardcover book older than one year, the fee is $10.00.
For a paperback book, the fee is $3.00.
For a magazine, the fee is $1.00.
For a plastic magazine cover, the fee is $2.00.
Payment will be refunded if a book is found and returned
within the same school year during which it was lost.
What happens if I return a school library book to the public library?
The public library will recognize that it is not their book
and will let me know. I work part-time at the Sayreville Public Library,
so it is easiest for me to bring a book returned there back to school.
If you realize that you accidentally returned an Arleth book to the wrong library,
please contact that library as soon as you realize the error. Please let me
know as soon as possible as well. Your child will not be able to borrow another
Arleth library book until the missing one is returned or paid for.
What if my child's class misses library one week due to a holiday?
If school is closed on your child's library day, check the Date Due slip
in the back of his book. With our new schedule,I will try to reschedule
all missed borrowing classes within a day or two after the missed class.
The date will be the last date stamped in the back of the book. We are
using blue ink this year. With our Gold Star Responsibility Certificates,
students have been taught to check the due dates themselves so they will
be aware if a class has been rescheduled.
