I have been teaching at Arleth for 13 years. Besides working in school
libraries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, I have also worked as a children's
librarian for the Brooklyn Public Library for 8 years.
I decided to become a librarian after working in my local public library
during high school. The job involved all of my favorite things: working with
children, reading, music, arts and crafts, and the freedom to do many
different things so the work is always interesting! Learning how to involve
computers in my classes has added a whole new dimension to my career.
Kindergarten students strive to become good Shelf Elves!
A Shelf Elf: - returns his books on time,
- uses a shelf marker correctly when selecting books,
- speaks in a quiet voice,
- shows courtesy to others
- is responsible for lost or damaged books
First graders discover books that they can read themselves and begin to learn
about the different parts of the library as they search for their favorite
characters in fiction and favorite subjects in nonfiction.
Second graders learn how the library is organized and how to find the
books they like on their own using our computer catalog and call numbers. They
are also introduced to encyclopedias and beginning research.
Third graders dive into library organization and research in more depth with
the Dewey Decimal System; additional reference sources such as almanacs and
atlases, and more detailed research with note taking and bibliographies.
All students utilize the computer lab as an integral part of their learning
with a focus on internet safety and beginning awareness that all websites are
not created equally well. They are introduced to media presentation tools such
as Powerpoint, Storybird, and Voicethread.
