What is Jump Rope For Heart?
Eisenhower Elementary School focuses on heart health every February. For the fifth consecutive year students will be participating in the American Heart Association’s annual Jump Rope for Heart program. This fun event promotes physical fitness, helps students learn jumping skills, encourages community service, and raises money to fund lifesaving research and educational programs.

What’s the history at Eisenhower?
Last year Eisenhower students raised $6,544 for the American Heart Association and ranked 6th in Middlesex County!  In 2008-2009 we raised $5,764 and ranked 7th in the county. The previous year Eisenhower ranked 8th with $5,600. This is an outstanding cause for Eisenhower to be involved in, and we are very proud of our students. Studies indicate that 90% of all U.S. citizens have been touched by heart disease or stroke. If it hasn’t affected you personally, it has probably affected a friend or relative. Through this year’s Jump Rope For Heart program our students will once again have the opportunity to get healthier through exercise, while helping our community fight America’s #1 and #3 killers.

How do Eisenhower students participate in this worthwhile cause?
Students in K-3 will participate in Jump Rope for Heart. The event will be held in early February and all students will attend.  Students will bring home a flyer about Jump Rope for Heart in mid January. Parents need to sign the permission slip, and encourage participation. Students simply collect contributions from people who want to support the American Heart Association.  We ask that students DO NOT go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations.  To celebrate the money we raised, we have a Jump Rope for Heart event in the gym that all students will attend.

Does Kindergarten participate in Jump Rope for Heart?
Yes.  Although Kindergarten students do not have P.E. as a special, they still participate in the fundraiser and will attend the Jump-a-thon event in the gym.  Even students who do not participate will attend.  A notice will be sent home before the event reminding parents to have their children wear sneakers on the day they are coming to the gym.

Is it true students can collect contributions online?
You’ll notice that there is way for your child to do all the legwork on the computer. Out–of-town family and friends can make contributions into a student/specific web site, and your child and Eisenhower will automatically be credited. See how easy this is by checking out the Jump Rope site: www.americanheart.org/jump. The deadline for turning in online contributions is the day of the event.

Are there individual incentives for Eisenhower students?
Students get excited about collecting donations, especially since the American Heart Association offers them incentive thank-you gifts and the Eisenhower Physical Education department receives money towards equipment based on the total donations. Individual thank-you gifts are awarded based on the level of donations a student raises, and these gifts are all outdoor fun and exercise related. Additionally, the class that raises the most money will receive an extra P.E. class, the class that has the most participation will recieve extra prises, and anyone who raises over $40.00 will be placed in a drawing to win extra prizes.

Are there additional merits in setting a new bar for Eisenhower?
If the students raise $5,000, Mr. Tola and Mrs. Braun have volunteered to color their hair pink for a day.  The students get really excited about the possiblity of this happening.
