What Are We Learning

 This week in class:

Please study your spelling and reading words each week.
This week in class:

Spelling/Phonics - We are learning about the short vowel “u” sound.
This week's spelling words include us, bus, must, cut, cub, club, with, then,
don’t and says. Please note that the new list includes some words from last
week. This week's spelling test will include spelling words from all of our
word lists to date. It is important to remember that spelling is cumulative.
Please practice spelling, reading and writing these words every night.
There will be a spelling test on Friday.

Reading - This week's high frequency words are be, grow, does, live, food and
many. Students need to be able to read these words. At this time, they are
not required to spell them.

This week's robust vocabulary is below. Students do not need to know how to
read these words. They need to be able to tell what they mean.

claimed – If you claim something, you say it is yours.
dine – Saying that you dine is a fancy way of talking about eating.
groaned – A person who groans makes a deep sound that shows unhappiness.
classify – When you classify something, you put it into a group with other
things like it.
function – Something’s function is its use. The function of a hat is to
cover your head.
nutritious – When something is nutritious, it is healthful to eat.

Students will continue to work on identifying details in a story.

Practice reading the story "Plants Can’t Jump" in your black reading
notebook.
There is a reading test on Friday.

We will also be discussing words that have blends with “r” (ex. trap, frog
and trick).

Grammar – We are learning about nouns that name animals and things.

Math – We are learning about subtraction.

Social Studies – We will begin learning about different types of
communities. Please make sure your child can recite his/her address and
phone number. This will be a graded skill for social studies.
