This Month in 1 A-1

December is here and the holiday season is upon us. It is such and exciting time for the children and me!

In December we will be learning about Matter. The children will explore the 3 states of matter, solids, liquids and gases, and learn about their properties. We will be experimenting with mass and capacity as ways of measuring matter.

We will continue to work on those "Fast Facts" in math and hopefully have more and more checkered flags decorating our walls. Many of the children are moving right along with memorization of addititon facts and some have moved onto subtraction for the "Math Minute.". In our math lessons we will continue to learn subtraction strategies and begin to explore concepts of place value. Developing number sense is of key importance in math success.

We're reading right along! Reading fluency in 1 A-1 is getting better every day! When reading at home be sure to question you child with lots of higher level thinking questions...the "Whys" and "Hows" of things that happen in the book. We are focusing on main idea and story retelling. We will also be looking to develop those inference skills by making connections of text to text, text to self and text to the world.

Our class is working on developing great sentences using dialogue! Be on the look out for some amazing stories in the near future. We can't wait to start publishing!
