Projects 2007-2008

Trimester 1 Exam:

Make a subdirectory under your homedrive called Tri1Exam.  Save all the following in there.

Write a brief 2 paragraph description of you Senior Service Project.  Save it as ProjectsTri1Exam.

Go to the Internet and find 4 to 8 sites that have some sort of relationship to your topic.  Be sure to make note of the site addresses for a bibliography later.  Copy the text from the web page and past it to four distinct documents called One.doc, Two.doc, Three.doc, Four.doc.  Insert a comment at the end of the first complete sentence in each document that references the website(s) with some type of disclaimer note.  While you are doing all this, make a collection of pictures that you can use later.

Format Two.doc to have two uneven columns, EXCEPT the last sentence that should be a normal one-column text.  Include an appropriate picture somewhere in the document between the columns.  On one of the other 3 documents, include table with some information relating to the topic.  Apply an auto format.  On one of the remaining two, place a border around one whole page.  In all four documents, add text if necessary and include a Heading one on each page, and at least two Heading 2s.  Insert the 4 documents at the end of  ProjectsTri1Exam.doc as subdocuments.

Expand when necessary to do the following.

Insert an auto- table of contents on its own page before the document.

Insert an index at the end with at least 10 entries

Put a cross-reference in document Four.doc that refers to any section in document two.doc, but notes the page number .For example, (see page 4).

Insert a proper MLA format Title page at the beginning of the document.  Insert the appropriate MLA header on each page.  Insert a proper MLA bibliography at the end of the document.

Throughout the document, use different kinds of formats to impress me.

Go to Access.  Create a Photo database of the pictures you have collected.  Remember descriptions and source info.

Create an animated gif that represents your project.

Make a small table called Client List of 4-8 people who may be affected by your Service Project.  Include name, full address & phone #, and some type of description as to who they are.  The phone numbers should be mixed from the 201 and 973 areas.  Also create a matching form with a header and footer.  Create another table called New Clients.  Make up similar information for 2 other people.  Create a Query to APPEND New Clients to Client List.  Create a Query that will MAKE a TABLE from the Client list called “201 people”

Create a PowerPoint Presentation.  Each slide should be one of the pictures that you acquired.  Then you should add notes: not about the picture necessarily, but how it ties in with your service project.  The notes are more like journal entries.

ALL DONE!

ASSIGNMENT: The goal of this assignment is for you to experiment with a program you have never used before, and see how much you can learn on your own.   We will use the program Paint Shop Pro.  First create a tiny Web site (use one of your old HTML files) on your own, and save that site as PSP.htm. Do the tutorials provided.  Then come back here and complete these assignments:

Using Paint Shop Pro, do 4 of the following:

  1. Take an image and convert it to a watermark. Save as PSP1.gif.
  2. Paint a small picture, using at least three or four colors.  Save as PSP2.gif.
  3. Design a button. (E.g., a ``home'' or ``back'' button.). Save as PSP3.gif.
  4. Design a multi-colored banner with text and a few graphical elements. This banner should be a transparent GIF.  Save as PSP4.gif.
  5. Take a photograph and apply two or three filtering operations or other image manipulation operations (e.g., mirror) to it.  Save as PSP5.gif

All images should be saved as interlaced GIF89a (GIF) images. Open your Web site (HTML file) and use your images in it. If you use the watermark, use it as the background for this page and insert the other images. The text on the page should be a brief description of how you produced each of the four images. SAVE.

After reading the introductions, open PROGRAMS – JASC SOFTWARE – PAINT SHOP PRO 7

All the files you will need should be in the SHARED directory. Let me know if any are missing.

Then try the exercises listed: Exercises:
The Color Panel
Recent Colors Dialog Box
The Color Dialog Box
Selecting Color from an Image

First, finish (or restart?) NJSCHOOLS.xls

Then..

E     Collect 10 pictures regarding your interview topic, as listed in TURNITIN.

E     Complete the SUMMARY FILL IN FORM as discussed.  Expand your summary from what you did in the summer.  Then look for two ARTICLES (not interviews) about your person (see below) and do two more summaries.

FOCUS:
Kip = Steve Wozniak
Anthony = Jeff Bezos
Nick = Ray Kurzweil
Frank = Paul Allen
Ron = Steve Chen

E     Remember, you can switch your topic to one of the other people from the original assignment, but not one that is already being researched by another student.

August 15th, 2007

Search the web for transcripts of two INTEVIEWS with each of any two (2) of the following people. (That’s 4 interviews altogether)

AS SOON AS you settle on which 2 people (you may want to look for interviews first, before deciding) go to TURNITIN.COM and post your selection.  You must read what all your classmates have posted, because each person on the following list can only be chosen twice.  That is, if one other student is researching the topic you want, that is OK, but if TWO classmates  have already chosen the topic, it is off the list.

Read the 4 interviews, and E-Mail to me (dcostantino@shp.org) both the website link, date of the interview (the DATE is quite important, as you might imagine), and a short explanation as to the content of each interview. Here are the people you can choose from, in no particular order. Remember to pick two (you can send two separate e-mails, or one email with both.) Find two or three e-pictures of the people you chose. Then find at least 1 picture that relates to his/her topic. Email me at least 4 pictures: one of each person, and one of each topic

July 15, 2007.

The Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR) documented  A Public-Interest Vision of the National Information Infrastructure way back in 1993 when the Internet was to most, a non-entity or a cute little way to spend time.  At that time, the term “internet” was not mainstream; references to the National Information Infrastructure (NII) are really references to today’s internet.  Go to the website http://www.cpsr.org/prevsite/cpsr/nii_policy.html  and READ the Executive Summary, keeping in mind that it was written in 1993.  Consider their concerns and suggestions.  At this point in time, 13 years later, do you think that we have successfully avoided the pitfalls?  Give specific examples of the points listed and evaluate the success or failure in these areas.  Do this for at least three points, preferably NOT three that you think ALL succeeded or ALL failed.  What do you see as the most dangerous problem?

Then add a short paragraph about some problem with the present internet that they did not foresee & e-mail to me all of the above to me, preferable as a WORD document.

As future voters, it is also important to see the link: http://www.cpsr.org/issues/vote Just email me a few sentences about what you read here.

Do the above assignment FIRST, before you know anything else about this organization.  When you get some time after you have completed the above, navigate thru other areas of this website to find out more about this organization in the present.  Now go to www.turnitin.com to post something about a facet of this organizations not already discussed.  You will have a NEW class ID.  If you need instructions on how to login, look back on my overall website for a section named Turn It In.  Your Class ID & Password are at the bottom of THIS PAGE.  When you log in, go directly to the DISCUSSION area to post your ideas.

Email your other products to me at dcostantino@shp.org
