Based on the educational principle that the mind and body are one and the
school system is responsible for educating the whole child, the educational
philosophy of Physical Education supports the following beliefs: (1) Physical
Education is not just a collection of activities, but is a well organized,
sequenced program which is designed to meet specific objectives. (2) Physical
Education should help students develop physical fitness, neuromuscular
skills, coordination of skills, positive attitudes and behaviors, a level of
participation for social enjoyment and/or a competitive level. (3) The
ultimate test of the success of a Physical Education program lies in the life
of the graduates. Graduates of a successful program maintain a desirable
level of physical fitness, understand the effects of exercise on the human
body, are aware of the benefits of a physically active lifestyle, and exhibit
positive behaviors and attitudes both as a spectator and a participant. (4)
Physical education should explore and develop the concepts of sharing,
cooperation, safety, good sportsmanship, and constructive competition. Good
habits and attitudes toward physical activity and fitness must be cultivated
and students ought to be encouraged to pursue a life-long enjoyment of these.
