Helpful Hints for a Happy Pre-K Year:

  • Help your child recognize and write his/her name correctly.

 

  • Help your child identify some basic shapes, name colors, and recognize upper/lower case letters of the alphabet and numbers from 0-20.

 

  • Help your child write upper/lower case letters and numbers correctly.

 

  • Help your child become familiar with holding a pencil and crayon correctly, and with cutting straight and curved lines using a pair of blunt scissors.

 

  • Read to your child daily and visit the library.

 

  • Help your child recognize ryhming words.

 

  • Help your child know left and right as well as parts of the body.

 

  • Help your child practice saying his/her full name, phone number and address.

 

  • Practice listening and following direction skills. Tell your child to do something only once. Try not to repeat the directions unless absolutely necessary.

 

  • Encourage your child to dress him/herself, including buttoning, zipping and tying shoes.

 

  • Encourage skipping, hopping (on one foot) and jumping. Also help your child practice going up/down stairs alternating feet.
