3rd Reading
We have finished reading Tuck Everlasting and students would like to watch the
movie to detect similarities and differences between the book and movie. I
have sent home a permission slip (sorry about the spelling errors) for you to
sign since it is PG rated. It is really quite innocuous. However, if you
would prefer your child remain in the regular education classroom, I will
provide enrichment materials for that time. Please return the form as soon as
possible. We will have our end of book final vocabulary quiz on Friday. I
have sent home the words we have already covered. On the back side of the
packet is a list of extra credit for those who may need to improve the average
grade for the previous quizzes. Clearly this is optional but there are some
really wonderful words to build vocabulary if you choose to embark! We will
also be working on book reports as a polished product. Mostly this will be
done in class but some students may need to bring home work if their pace is
slower than the group's. These will be done as a story told by the character
each has been following throughout the book.

5th Math
We have taken our Unit 2 test. A couple of students may have brought home the
test to make corrections or complete areas left blank to improve the grade. We
went over the test and skills so they should be able to complete these
independently. We are working with decimals and how to multiply and divide
them before starting a math project incorporating concepts of base ten and
other number systems. We will be using curriculum developed by William and
Mary for this exploration. We will have a test next Tuesday covering decimal
multiplication and division as well as individualized retesting of concepts
missed on the Unit 1 and 2 tests to ensure that these skills have been learned.

2nd Math
We are delving into place value and regrouping to the tens and hundreds
place. I am teaching students various uses of manipulatives and notations for
regrouping strategies. We will be going back and forth between addition and
subtraction this week and next. We will also be using graphic organizers for
detecting and utilizing patterns in our problem solving. All students have
passed the Everyday math material tests for Units 1 and 2 (I give these as
pretests)and we are practicing some of the shakier areas this week.

Thanks for all that you do!
