Homework

1. AGENDAS: Your child will bring his or her agenda home every afternoon after we receive them in the
classroom. The agenda books are a handy place for teachers and parents to send notes and newsletters
back and forth. I will also occasionally use the agenda to communicate with you regarding your child's
behavior. Finally, we'll use the agenda books to keep track of the nightly reading component
of your child's homework, as described below. Children are responsible for delivering the agenda to you
each afternoon. Please communicate this expectation to your child and review and sign the agenda each
day. Daily use of agendas helps us keep children's behavior and academic progress on track, and
demonstrates to them that families and teachers work together as a team.

2. HOMEWORK FOLDERS: We will introduce homework folders a couple of weeks into the school year.
The folders will usually go home on Tuesday afternoons. They are due back each Monday morning.
Children are responsible for taking care of their folders and turning them in on time. I'll send you
further information regarding homework when the folder first goes home.

3. READ, READ, READ! Reading is the most fun homework of all! Nearly every child looks forward to
family read-aloud time, and it is the best thing for helping children succeed in school. Children need to
read aloud to family members (this builds reading fluency), and to hear family members read aloud to
them (this builds vocabulary, good vocabulary knowledge being strongly linked to long term academic
success). I strongly encourage every family to read aloud with children every evening, and ask families
to record at least five nights of reading each week in agenda books. Homework grades on report cards
are based on nightly reading records as well as on homework folder work.
