What is the role of the Director of Student Development?

As your Director of Student Development, I have a three part role
here at Bosque School. The first being a school counselor for
students. I provide individual and group counseling as needed
based on student concerns regarding crisis interventions and
serious matters that affect student academic performance. As a
leader and a consultant, I will assist faculty, staff, and
parents by providing information related to the developmental and
psychosocial issues regarding students. Further, I will work as a
community liaison in providing necessary referrals to other
professionals in the community. I am an advocate for all youth by
offering support at parent meetings and working collaboratively
with the Learning Specialists regarding necessary accommodations for students.

What is the best way to get a therapist referral?

My best advice is to check with your insurance company to see
which counselor/therapist is allowable under your plan. At that
time, we may discuss the options you have available to meet your
families needs. I am also available to consult with you about
referrals that I have established over the years as a community
liaison.

What is confidentiality?

The counselor is allowed to maintain confidentialiy when a
student seeks support services for such life crisis that may
exist. Memory notes will be taken in order to aide the counselor
in providing efficient care. To protect the confidentiality of
your student(s), these memory aides are shredded upon their
graduation or withdrawal from school.

However, the counselor is not allowed to maintain confidentiality
when instances of physical abuse, sexual abuse, the consideration
of suicide or the knowledge of a crime are reported.
I belong to the American School Counseling Association and I am
licensed through the state of NM as a licensed professional
counselor and a k-12 school counselor. I subscribe to their code
of ethics and I comply with all NM state laws.

What if my child is in crisis and is threatening to harm themselves?

This can be very difficult for you and your child when your child
is in crisis and in need of supplemental support. If your child
is threatening to harm themselves, you have the choice to take
your child to the closest emergency room or to call 911. When
threats are made, the child is at their worst and is feeling
overwhelmed. Guidance from the emergency medical team will be
able to evaluate your child's well-being and thoughts to
determine if their crisis warrants a hospital stay or therapy
within the community.
