Notes for chapter 5 are posted along with a flow chart for converting units. This chapter is primarily a review unit in measurement and unit conversions. The only new concept is significant figures. Start looking over the material. You can expect short quizzes to test these important science skills on a daily basis.

Be sure that you have completed the reactions and conclusion questions for the Activity Series Lab into your lab notebook. If you missed this lab you must see me ASAP for instructions.

Read section 8.5 on Reactions of Metals and Nonmetals (pages 231-235).

Also, section 8.6 Ways to Classify Reactions provides an excellent summary of what we have learned so far in the unit on chemical reactions.

If you understand what you are learning about, you should be able to do the problems at the end of the chapter that correspond to these sections.

Do Focus Questions 1 and 2 on page 223, and 1 through 4 on page 230.
Reading the corresponding pages in your book will help. A quiz over this material is a real possibility.

Finish the summary entries into your lab notebook for the Chemical Reactions Investigations I Lab. Follow the instructions at the end of the lab sheet. BEWARE- you could be asked to write a lab report for any of the labs completed to date at any time. Be sure that your work is done and you bring your lab notebook to class each day. 
 
You should read through pages 213 through 223 to help you better understand what you are learning about.
 
Also, I apologize for the incorrect posting of acid-base notes instead of chapter 8 (chemical reactions) notes. The problem has been fixed so you can now print out a new set of notes.

Due next class (Thursday, E/Friday, ABC) Complete the first 10 on the Balancing Chemical Reactions Handout which was passed out last class. Also, print out the outline notes for chapter 8 and start looking over the first two sections in the chapter.

Homework due next class period- complete the worksheet "Translating Word Equations".
Look through the first few sections of chapter 7. Chapter 7 notes are posted.
If you lose your worksheet, or were absent and did not get one, you can print one out from the "homework handouts" section.

You have now had some introduction to naming chemical compounds and writing formulas (Chapter 4). To learn, review, and practice this go to the chem team's link on nomenclature .

 TEST DATES ARE POSTED ON THE CHEM CALENDER

Posting Date: Tuesday, Sept. 29 

We have started a new unit and the test focus objectives are now posted. You should look them over NOW.
 
Textbook reading- read beyond page 70 in chapter 3 so that you understand what ions are, can describe their atomic structure, and know how they combine to form ionic compounds.

Posting Date: Tuesday, Sept. 22 (The Autumnal Equinox)
Get a jump on the next unit. There are notes posted for chapter 3 part B and chapter 4. Very soon there will be test focus objectives for this new unit so stay tuned!

Before the next class (the one after the test) you need to read pages 63-70. There is a good possibility that there will be a quiz over this reading.

There are outlines notes posted for chapter 3 (part A) in the chemdocs section.
Also, there is a review sheet for chapter 3 posted in the homework documents section.
This assignment is due Thursday, Sept. 17 for E block, and Monday, Sept. 21 for A, B and C blocks.

Due next class- complete the analysis questions for the distillation lab.
ALSO- read the first 5 sections of chapter 3 (pages 47-58).
Test date is posted on the calendar. See test focus objectives and begin preparing now.
I am available most days during activity block for help so please stop in if you need assistance.

Due next class- complete the analysis questions for experiment 2- Observations of a Chemical Reaction (directly into your lab notebook). Also, make sure that your lab notebook is set up correctly.
Expect to have your lab notebook checked by me at any time in class.
 

Posting Date: Monday, August 31  (Quizzes can happen any day!)

There is no formal written homework assignment due this week. HOWEVER...
you should be using your text to practice, review and test your knowledge. I recommend that you try the following: Examples 2.2 and 2.3 on pages 33 and 38, the Self Check Exercises 2.2 and 2.3 that follow each example on pages 33 and 38. The answers for these are in your text.

Now is the time to print out the Chapter 2 Review Sheets. Note that there are three different sheets.
You need to do the one that says "Review Sheet" it will be page 3 on the bottom. Use your textbook to help you. This is due Thursday/Friday of this week- see calender.

Homework Reminder... for Friday/Monday August 21/24,
bring in your signed safety contract and the 5 questions for the handout- "why do I have to take chemistry?"
 
IMPORTANT CHANGE TO THE QUIZ FOR NEXT WEEK.
Quiz will only focus on the first 4 test focus objectives- use the Ch. 1 outline notes for the nature of science information.

Work/plan ahead...  see 5 and 6 below.

For the first week of school... If your first day of class is Wednesday, you need to have items 1 through 4 done by the next class on Friday. If your class meets on Thursday, these items need to be complete by the following Monday.

  1. Bookmark and familiarize yourself with the class website. Plan on using it to your advantage.
  2. Make sure you have all of the required materials- calculator, 3- ring binder and spiral-bound lab notebook.
  3. Go to documents section of this web-site and print out, thoroughly read, and then sign the safety contract. You will hand this in to me at the next class meeting. 
  4. Print out notes for Chapter 1 and 2. 
  5. Read/skim chapter 1 sections 1.1, 1.2, and 1.6.
  6. Work ahead... Print the Chapter 2 Review Sheets.
  7. Begin work on chapter 2 review sheets (specific instructions on which one to work on will be discussed in class).
  8. Plan/work ahead- look over the lab make-up procedures document so you know what you are expected to do if you miss a lab for whatever reason.
