Adv. Chem Homework

Posting Date: Friday, Nov. 20

The next unit will be on chemical equilibrium. You can start looking over the Chem 30 Website tutorial. Your textbook also does a good job introducing this concept so you may want to look at Chapter 17.

Tuesday of Thanksgiving week we will be doing a lab on Beer's Law which has to do with measuring concentrations in solutions.

TEST DATE FOR KINETICS UNIT - Friday, Nov. 20

Posting Date: Monday, Nov. 9

Due Thursday, Nov. 12. Be prepared to share your mini-presentation on a catalyst.

Also, you can expect a test on the kinetics unit sometime before Thanksgiving. More details and a final assignment are forthcoming. Test objectives are posted.

Posting Date: Wednesday, Oct. 28

For the current unit on kinetics- go through the first two lessons at Chem 30...
Introduction to kinetics, and collision theory and reaction mechanisms. Since it is a tutorial, you should attempt to do the practice problems. The answers are there for you to check.

Test on Thermodynamics is Wednesday, Oct. 21

Posting Date: Tuesday, Oct. 13

Due next class- complete the problem set handout (assignment 2) from the Chem 30 website.
Also, go through the entire Chem 30 lesson on entropy and do the online assignment for practice.

TEST OBJECTIVES ARE NOW POSTED.

Posting Date: Wednesday, Oct. 7

Due the week after fall break- Tuesday, Oct. 13. Complete the problem set handout (assignment 3) from the Chem 30 website.

What's ahead in advanced chemistry?

We will use the Chem 30 website to learn about entropy and Gibb's free energy. This is Lesson 3 and immediately follows the lessons on Hess's Law. Look for more review problems and a set of test objectives to be available soon. Tentative test date is Wednesday, Oct. 21

Posting Date: Friday, Sept. 25

Read pages 303-305 on Hess's law. Try to complete Self Check Exercises 10.6 on page 305.
NOTE: you can review Hess's Law at the Chem 30 website or at ChemTeam in the thermochemistry section.

Posting Date: Wednesday, Sept. 23

Complete the practice problems handout on thermochemical equations

Posting Date: Thursday, Sept. 17

Be sure that you complete the analysis questions and problems for the heat of solution (energy in a cold pack) lab.

Posting Date: Friday, Sept. 11

For the week of Sept. 14. The next unit involves an exploration of thermochemistry concepts, beyond simple phase change and calorimetry calculations learning in general chemistry.  You need to review the basic concepts of energy, temperature and heat prior to learning new concepts such as enthalpy and Hess's law.

Please read/review the nature of energy in chapter 10 of the text. In particular, sections 10.1 through 10.6.
Also, use the ChemTeam's website (thermochemistry section) to review the concepts of energy, heat and temperature. In particular, be sure you read through the section on enthalpy.

Posting Date: Monday, Aug. 24

Due Wednesday, Aug. 26...

You need to complete the pre-lab questions for the metal barbonate identification lab. In your lab notebook you should have a purpose and brief introduction, followed by the pre-lab. It is OK if you started with the pre-lab section first this time. Read though the procedure prior to class. NO NOT WRITE A PROCEDURE IN THE NOTEBOOK. This will happen when you actually perform the work.

Posting Date: Thursday, Aug. 20

Due Monday, Aug. 24...

Read the Sherlock Holmes case of the Fraudulent Ketone and answer the questions. Be prepared to share your investigation with the class.
