| Hello Parents! August 29, 2008
I sent home with your child on Friday a master copy of the parent volunteer
sign up sheet! I look forward to working with you all!
Below is a copy of some Curriculum Night info just in case you weren't able
to make it.
Thank you so much for your support!

Curriculum Night 2008 - 2009
I am looking forward to a great year working with this excellent
group of students. I believe that students learn best in a classroom where
they feel safe and welcome. I strive to create a “classroom family”. I
want the students to feel comfortable with each other and with me. I
believe that this is accomplished through modeling respectful behavior for
the students, and through having appropriate classroom rules and academic
expectations.
• In addition to the Double Eagle School Rules, students in our
classroom are expected to follow the following classroom rules:
1. Treat others with respect.
2. Do your work quietly.
3. Follow directions the first time.
4. Raise your hand to talk.
5. Keep your hands, feet, and other objects to yourself.
It is important for me to have consistent with consequences for breaking
rules. If a student chooses to break a rule the following will occur:
1. verbal warning
2. name on board – stay for a portion of recess to discuss
inappropriate behavior
3. If behavior continues following a recess talk, a parent or guardian
will be contacted by me.
Please be aware that in extreme cases, such as hurting another child, an
office discipline referral will occur.
• Homework – You should expect your child to have math homework
Monday – Friday on a nightly basis. The students will use a homework folder
to transport homework to and from school. Therefore, it is important that
the students bring a backpack everyday. Please help your child with
homework by providing a quiet place to work, and by checking their work when
finished.
• Nightly Reading - In addition to homework assigned each day, I
expect the children to be reading or be read to nightly for 10 minutes.
After the first term, students will be expected to be reading 20 minutes a
day. The nightly reading log will be to report what is being read only 4
nights a week, but students should be reading every night. You are on the
honor system. The students can be reading independently, orally, or
listen while a parent, guardian, or older sibling reads. The nightly
reading logs are due on Fridays and a new Reading Log will be sent home
Friday in their Homework folders.
• Make-up work - it is important that your child come to school
everyday. Often work done in class can not be “made-up”. When your child
is absent, work that can be done as make-up work will be sent home when your
child returns to school.
• Friday Folders - Every Friday you child will bring home a Friday
Folder. This folder will contain communication from the school and myself.
Please look through this folder with your child each week.
• Parent Volunteering!- You are more than welcome any time to come to
class and observe or lend a helping hand. I have a parent volunteer sign up
sheet going home with you today; please check your schedule and sign up for
a time and return to school tomorrow with your child so that I can send it
out in their Friday Folders. If you do sign up for a time and are unable to
make it, please let me know or ask another parent to substitute.
• If you are not able to volunteer but would like to help there is a
basket of “To Do’s” that you can pick up in our class. Mostly this will be
books to assemble—you can take them home or go to the work room and work on
it.
• Website –I will post a newsletter on the website every Friday. I
have also included on the website the weekly homework (excluding the math)
and weekly spelling list. There is also a class schedule, and hopefully, I
will be able to post our volunteer schedule on the website as well.
• Book orders- Book orders will be coming home monthly. They are
coming home to you in their Friday Folders and due back the following
Wednesday. I use the bonus points to buy books for the Classroom Library!
So, everything goes back to the class and your child.
If you would like to set up a meeting about your child, please contact me
via email. I try to check it every morning and every afternoon.
