Dear Families,
In Ms. Romero’s class we are working hard to learn everything we will need to be ready for
second grade. That’s our job every day!
In spelling, we know one thing we want to learn by the end of the year is the list of the most frequently
used words in first grade. That’s 100 words! We want to be able to spell these words and know them –
not have to sound them out.
Every week we will be charting our progress, just to see how we are doing. We can see the words
on our wall in our classroom and practice them when we have free time. We can also spend as much time
as we want practicing them at home too.
Attached you will find the list of all the words we want to learn to spell. Every Friday
we will be tested on a random set of 10 words. We will then chart our progress on a graph.
We choose the words randomly, unlike a typical spelling test, so that we don’t just learn the words for that
particular week and then forget them because we aren’t tested on them again. The same words may show
up on several tests.
The best way to begin studying is to go through the words and mark the words that your child
cannot spell; those are the words you should spend time studying. You’ll be surprised how many words
your first grader can already spell! The graded spelling tests will be sent home on the Monday following
the test so you can see your child’s progress. When you come to the classroom, please ask to see the
charts which each of us will keep to see how we are doing!
Thanks for your help!
