District Course Description and Requirements
English 9 Honors is designed for students who demonstrate
high levels of ability and interest in language arts (literature and
composition). Literature for analysis and appreciation is drawn from
national Advanced Placement guidelines. Literary analysis as well as
mechanics and usage skills are developed through specific writing
tasks. Speaking, listening, and study skills are included. Students
should expect approximately six hours per week of work outside of class
as well as reading assignments over the summer and other breaks.
Students are encouraged to maintain a "B' average to be successful in this program.
Because of the level of difficulty, this course carries a weighted grade.

We offer the following as a guide for you. These come from listening to
district leaders and APS teachers.
An Honors Studeent will:
1. show interest in and support of the program through positive
participation, completion of assignments, and excellent attendance
2. have demonstrated academic ability by high test scores and high
grades
3. have been recommended by eighth grade language arts teacher(s)
4. have parent signature and support of the program
5. have scored in the top stanines on district reading tests (no less than
60 percentile)
6. have demonstrated an interest and aptitude in writing (good sentence
studcture, few errors in mechanics, and the ability to correct errors in
rewriting after teacher explanantions)
7. have a strong interest in literature
8. have read and responded actively to a broad range of literary
selections
9. have shown ability and aptitude in literary analysis
10. display responsibility through personal management which
includes working without supervision and setting goals
11. demonstrate a positive work ethic.
Literature to be read and studied in English 9 Honors includes but is not
limited to:
Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Romeo and Juliet, The Odyssey,
Antigone, Old Man and the Sea, Animal Farm,To Kill a Mockingbird
