For the next two (2) weeks, we will be examining several different important individuals in the
settling of New Mexico. What I would like you to do is to research one of the following individuals:
• Hernando Cortes.
• Christopher Columbus.
• Ponce de Leon.
• Cabeza de Vaca.
• Antonio de Mendoza.
• Fray Marcos.
• Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.
• Castano de Sosa.
• Antonio de Espejo.
• Juan de Onate.
• Juan and Vicente de Zaldivar.
Use your PERSIAN Chart to look at:
Political.
Economic.
Religion.
Social.
Intellectual Arts.
Near.
The Friday before the due date, you will turn in three questions based on your findings. You will also
have a Vocabulary Quiz following Monday.
Your paper should include the following:
• An Introductory paragraph with thesis.
• Body of at least three (3) paragraphs with at least three supporting facts for each paragraph.
• Conclusion with a statement of what you covered, learned, and thought of the project.
• A bibliography with at least three sources of information (two of which are books!!!).
You will report your finding to the class in the form of a research paper (at least five (5) paragraphs),

• Juan Bautista de Anza.
• Pedro de Villasur.

doing this though several different methods. First by reading chapters 7; then through important
individuals such as the following:
• Kit Carson.
• Father Antonio Jose Martinez.
• Gertrudes Barcelo.
• Stephen W. Kearny.
• Charles Bent, St. Vrain.
• William Becknell.
• Albino Perez.
• Manuel Armijo.
In your paper you need to be sure that you cover the following areas:
• Where and when the individual live?
• Describe his main contribution to New Mexico.
• What difficulties did he face and how did he over come them?
• How did his contributions change local and neighboring societies?
• Describe how did his contributions affect our lives today.

I would like you to create a short poem, preferably about New Mexico, but can be on anything. Then I
would like you to use the handouts and calligraphy pens to write it in one of the scripts.

New Mexico Territory:
In this assignment, we will be looking at the different events and individuals that helped to makeup
New Mexico Territorial History. As part of this assignment, you will need to read chapters 8 and 9.
For your individual assignment, you will need to pick one of the below individuals/events:
• Brigham Young.
• The Long Walk.
• Glorieta Pass.
• Geronimo.
• Buffalo Soldier.
• Lincoln County War.
• William Bonney.
• Lew Wallace.
• James Carleton.
• Harvey Girls.
• Rough Riders.
• Spanish American War.
And then using the PERSIAN chart, investigate the following:
• Who/what were they?
• How did they change the climate/culture of N.M.?
• How the environment affected this event.
• Why was this event/individual so important to N.M. history?
On a map(s) locate the New Mexico Territories, the Forts and Stagecoach Routes, the Battles of the
Civil War, the Lincoln County War, and the path of the Long Walk.
