Assignment: Ottoman Empire (14 Nov - 30 Nov)
In this lesson, you will be investigating the Middle East and the Ottoman Empire. You will need to
read chapter 3 section 1, 2; chapter 8 (all sections). Vocabulary will come from all readings. You will
use the web to research the Ottoman Empire and its Sultans. You will research the following areas:
v Housing.
v Religion.
v Cuisine.
v Art/Clothing.
v Education.
v Turkish Baths.
v Government, Laws, Human Rights.
v Allies/Enemies.
You will create a tri-fold travel brochure using Micro Soft Publisher. You are to pretend you are
working for a sultan wanting to make Ottoman Empire seem as appealing to travelers of that
timeframe. It will be your job to convince people that a trip to Ottoman Empire will be the vacation of
their dreams; therefore the brochures should be pleasant to look at and should highlight places of
interest. Some examples are: mosques, baths, cuisine, palaces, education, and religious ceremony.
Be sure to label pictures and include brief descriptions and information about Ottoman Empire. On
Friday, you will present your brochure to the rest of the class. This is an opportunity for you to
demonstrate your knowledge of Ottoman Empire.
