Mr. Sonnemaker is in his twentieth year of teaching and is happy to return to
teaching choral music at the high school level here at Carson High School.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Earlham College where he worked
with Dr. Dan Graves. Immediately after finishing his undergraduate degree he
was accepted in the Graduate Choral Conducting program at the University of
Oklahoma. While at O.U. he directed the University Chorus and studied choral
conducting with Dr. Dennis Shrock. After earning his Masters of Music in
Choral Conducting he returned to his hometown to earn teaching credentials
and do student teaching through the University of Evansville.
After completing student teaching Mr. Sonnemaker moved to Nevada to begin his
teaching career in Washoe County. Since that first year of teaching he has
taught music and directed ensembles at elementary through university levels
in Indiana and Nevada. In addition to choral music education he has taught
classes in general music, handbells and strings.
Mr. Sonnemaker also currently holds the position of Chancel Choir Director at
the First United Methodist Church in Reno, Nevada.
In addition to his work in the fields of education and conducting, Mr.
Sonnemaker enjoys performing. He has worked with the Brewery Arts Center
Summer Stock Company as music director for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way
to the Forum, a member of the cast of Smokey Joe's Cafe, and conductor and
the voice of Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors. He also enjoys singing as
a Tenor soloist with area ensembles and has performed comprimari and as a
