January 20, 2011.....Please see the announcements section for the pattern for presenting the Verbal Explanation. It''s very simple...just 5 sentences will do! Enjoy watching their brains growing and getting stronger. In science today we read P. 158-169, viewed our Garden, and continued our visual log of that by creating a picture of it's progress.

January 18, 2011.....Today we shared our Science Fair Hypotheses and drew amphibians for our visual dictionary.

January 11, 2011.....Today we shared our Science Fair Purposes and drew Mammals for our visual dictionary. Please don't forget that the Science Fair Hypothesis is due on Tuesday.

January 6, 2011.....Today we practiced how to walk from one place to another without talking, screaming, pushing, shoving, and wandering like a snake. The students did well.

January 3, 2011.....Today we discussed the science fair. There seems to be some confusion. Any project done MUST include an experiment. Showing me rotten fruit, or pictures of an octopus being born is NOT an experiment. Some of the students are having difficulty with the direction they will take. On Thursday after school (January 6th) I will be in the classroom with old science fair books that you and the students may look through. The purpose is due on January 11th. Some students have already turned theirs in and the projects have been approved.

November 30, 2010.....Woodland Habitats Video, and discussion about the Science Fair. NO VOLCANOS   OR   FLOWERS   changing colors will be allowed!! The packets will be going home on Thursday. Please watch for them!

November 18, 2010.....We watched a Magic School Bus Video called "Inside Ralphie." This was in support of our recent discussion about germs, what happens in your body when they are present, and how your body fights them.

November 16, 2010.....Today we reviewed then took a chapter test. Don't forget to purchase your yearbook. The price is $45 and sales end December 16,2010. After that date there will be no more yearbooks available. Buy it tomorrow when you pick up your child's report card!

November 8, 2010.....There will be no tutoring this Wednesday. We reviewed last weeks readings and continued with P. 108-122. Then we played an animal classification game which the students made last week.

November 4, 2010.....Animals grow and change and we made adult/baby playing cards.

November 2, 2010.....Bone experiment completed...Garden Mural Part II

October 26, 2010.....Bone experiment started, and Garden Mural started.

October 21, 2010.....More bones were brought in for our Bone Experiment. Magic School Bus Video - Spins a Web, The Special Ways of Spiders.

October 19, 2010.....Animals - amphibians, mammals, reptiles, insects and aracnids.

October 14, 2010.....Todays we discussed briefly the Skeletal System, Muscular System, and Nervous System. We will be doing an experiment in class to show the difference between adult and child bones. Each child is asked to bring in a bone (if possible) by next Tuesday. We need chicken and beef bones. Extra credit will be given in Science for the bone!

September 30, 2010.....Text P. 42-51 was read and discussed. New terms were added to our vocabularies: seedling, desert, and arctic.

September 28, 2010.....Text P. 34-41, comparison of variety of plants to people, and read the book "Recess at 20 below." Note to parents...please help - many students have not returned their science plant parts homework. It makes a big hole in the gradebook and will be reflected in the mid-trimester report. Don't forget to sign up for conferences. The list is hanging outside the second grade classroom.

September 21, 2010.....Discussion about the damage done to the garden over the weekend, a plan to let people know that it IS a garden, and watering.

September 16, 2010.....Vegetable seeds are in the ground!!! A Big thank you to Mrs. Kirk and her crew for helping with this. Now we wait and watch!

September 14, 2010.....P. 20-27, reviewed the needs of plants and the plans for planting on Thursday. Complete plant homework and return Wednesday or Thursday.

September 7, 2010.....Mrs. Kirk visited and explained the Winter Garden, discussed what we would be doing, shared a Lamb's Ear plant with the class and showed us some Chaste tree seeds.

September 2, 2010.....Today we added composted materials to our garden bed.

August 31, 2010.....Today we removed the weeds, rocks, and garbage from the planter box. On Thursday we will mix in come compost to prepare the soil for planting.

August 28th, 2010.....Dear Parents, First Grade will be participating in a Winter Garden project with the help of Kobe Kirk's Mom (Ms. Sarah Haggerty). Please have the children each bring a trowel or small shovel to school on September 2nd so that we can get started on cleaning out a planter. The following week we will be mixing composted materials into the bed, and then begin planting. Thank you for your help.

Happy New Year!!! Happy New School year that is. Welcome, we are going to have a super year, see you on Tuesday and Thursdays!
