Dear Key Communicators,

Yesterday afternoon an Arlington High School student was followed by two men in a white van in the neighborhoods surrounding Mulberry Lane (approx. ¾ mi. up Titusville Rd. from Rt. 55) in the Town of LaGrange.  The student ran away from the van and was picked-up by a neighbor and brought to her home.  The State Troopers have been notified and have spoken with at least two individuals who saw the van in the area.  The van is described as being white and older in style.  One man is described as being middle-aged, Caucasian with facial hair.  We do not have any further information at this time.

Dear Key Communicators and PTA Leaders,

There has been a change to the 2009-2010 Arlington School Year Calendar.  The Superintendent’s Conference Day originally scheduled for Friday, April 23 has been moved to Monday, April 19.  Teachers will attend on April 19, but school will not be in session.

The change was made in consideration of New York state tests, which were moved by the NYS Education Department from January to April.  This change will allow for greater educational continuity the week before the tests.

Copies of the revised calendar will be distributed to all staff and students in December.  For your convenience, a copy is attached to this e-mail and is available on-line at www.arlingtonschools.org

Dear Key Communicators,

As you may have heard, a gunman entered Pine Plains Stissing Mountain Middle/High School this morning and took a principal hostage.  The school was put on lockdown, police responded quickly, and fortunately, the suspect was taken into custody.  No one was injured.

We know that incidents like this one can invoke fear.  The safety of Arlington students and staff is our number one priority.  Arlington works closely with police, health, and other safety officials to ensure our preparedness in the event of an emergency.  We review and update our district safety plan regularly, conduct drills (including drills on how to handle a hostage situation), and provide training for our faculty and staff.

In a situation like the one that occurred in Pine Plains, a school is immediately put on lockdown.  This means that interior doors are locked, hallways are vacated, and students and staff are confined to their classroom.  No entry or exit is allowed.  You should know that in an emergency, we will do what is necessary to protect children first and then to inform you as accurately and fully as we can.

What should you do in an emergency?

1.       Do not go to the school unless officials ask you to come, although this may be your first instinct as a parent.  Your presence may interfere with emergency response.

2.       We will update the community as soon as possible through local media, newsflash, and the website.  Please use these sources of information instead of calling your school.  In a crisis situation, it is best to keep the district/school phone lines available for emergency communications.

3.       Tell your children NOT to use cell phones unless permitted.  Please do not attempt to call your child.  Cell phone use could put people at risk by alerting an intruder to a student’s whereabouts or by causing additional distractions during a tenuous situation.

4.       Stay tuned to local media and the district website for further instructions.

Our first priority is your child and the other children in the school.  In the event of an emergency, please be patient and understand if we are unable to respond to you as completely or quickly as you would wish.

We will continue our diligence to ensure the safety of all Arlington students and staff.  Let us all hope that we will never need to put our preparedness into action, but be assured that we are ready and able to implement our safety plans whenever necessary.

Dear Key Communicators,

We have begun to see cases of influenza and flu-like-illness in schools across our district. We continue to need your assistance to help prevent the flu from spreading. It passes easily from person to person, which is why it is so important for sick people to stay home.

We continue to work closely with the Dutchess County Department of Health (DCDOH) to monitor flu conditions, and we receive updates at least weekly from the Department of Health and the CDC. Although the Arlington School District has offered to hold H1N1 influenza vaccination clinics that would be run by the Dutchess County Department of Health, clinics have not yet been scheduled. We will update you if this occurs.

In our schools, the importance of hand washing and respiratory etiquette continues to be a focus with students. New hand washing posters are being posted in all student bathrooms. We also continue to focus on cleaning surfaces that have frequent hand contact.  An October flu update letter is being sent home this week.  Please read it carefully for steps you can take to help us prevent the flu from further spreading in our schools.  For your convenience, a copy of the letter can be accessed from the link below.
