SUMMER ASSIGNMENTS

Advanced Placement Studio Art Students

Summer Drawing Assignments:
You are to create five artworks over the summer to bring with you to art
class the FIRST day of school in September. Choose five artworks from the
choices listed at the bottom of this page. (Include at least one self-
portrait.) These artworks should be finished, high quality pieces, as you
will need them for your portfolio in this class! Artworks should be drawn
from direct observation, which means “from life.” DO NOT copy directly from
photographs!!!!! Photographs are only to be used as reference images. Your
artworks are to be original! Any drawing that merely copies someone else’s
photograph constitutes as plagiarism and will not be accepted!

Although you must choose from the list of subjects/ideas below, the media and
style for each drawing are your choice.

Recommended size: 18” x 24”
Media: Your Choice!

Choose FIVE of the following subjects/ideas for artworks:
You must include at least one self-portrait!
•	A SELF-PORTRAIT (showing a specific emotion or expression)
•	A SELF-PORTRAIT (showing something about yourself and your interests)
•	A SELF-PORTRAIT IN AN UNUSUAL REFLECTIVE MATERIAL
(ex. your face reflected in a spoon)
•	YOUR HAND (consider the entire piece of paper)
•	A STUDY OF NATURE (ex. a cropped section of a group of birch trees)
•	A STILL LIFE OBJECT or GROUP OF OBJECTS
(consider composition and interesting objects)
•	AN INTERESTING SECTION OF A ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE
•	A DRAWING OF A TYPE OF FOOD YOU ENJOY
•	A FIGURE DRAWING
•	PORTRAIT of SOMEONE ELSE
•	VISUAL INTERPRETATION OF SONG LYRICS OR A POEM

There is a substantial workload involved with Advanced Placement Studio Art,
therefore it is necessary for you to begin working over the summer! These
projects will be included in your first quarter grade. It is mandatory that
you complete them! Best of luck! Have fun! I look forward to seeing you
and your artworks in September!

Assignment # 5- __________________

Make your choices from the following list-

PEACE & WELCOME - A still life that expresses peacefulness AND welcoming.
Color Theory must be evident. What objects make you feel peaceful or ‘at
home’? How can you communicate this feeling?

TOOL- A functional metal object (tool). Your subject must touch at least 2
sides of your work surface. Look around, what looks interesting? In the
garage, in the kitchen…

FABRIC -A complicated piece of fabric. Consider wrinkles, tears, stripes,
patterns……

WHITE ON BLACK -Use ONLY a white charcoal pencil on black paper
to ‘illustrate’ popcorn.

LITERARY REFERENCE -Choose a scene from your favorite book. Imagine you are
the main character. Create an artwork in the viewpoint of the main character
(you). What are you experiencing? What do you see? How will you make the
viewer have the same experience?

FORBIDDEN & DANGEROUS - A landscape that is forbidden AND dangerous. Color
Theory must be evident. Where is this place? Is it real or imagined? Why is
it forbidden/dangerous? How can you communicate this feeling?

WHERE IS IT? - Open a magazine (one that contains photographic, drawn or
cartoon images) to a random page and tear or cut a small piece from it. This
shape is up to you, but should be no larger than 2 inches. Glue it on a
drawing/painting surface and use it as a starting point for your artwork.
Build around/upon the original image so that it is DIFFICULT/IMPOSSIBLE to
tell where the original image was placed.

THE BIKE- Bicycle still life- Ebony Pencil. Consider your viewpoint.
Foreshortening/Space. Which area if the bike is most interesting. Show full
range of value.

REFLECTIVE IDENTITY- A self portrait of “reflective identity” of how others
perceive you.

WRAPPED- Partially wrap a chair with cloth. Secure the cloth with rope (see
Jean Claude & Christo)

7 DEADLY SINS- Define the 7 deadly sins. How does ONE play out in an
experience you had?

HOT OFF THE PRESS- a NARRATIVE work based on an article from the newspaper.
Include the newspaper (no photocopies)

REFUGE- Where is your refuge? Depict how a place or object of refuge comforts
you. What do you do when you want to get away? Where do you go? What do you
bring? How do you feel? Consider historical events when people have needed
to seek refuge.
