Word Wall

The key to reading is words, words, words!  The more simple words your reader can easily recognize, the better able he/she will be to use other strategies to solve trickier words.   These are also words your writers are expected to spell correctly in their writing. There are typically 5 new words added per week.  Check below for ideas on how to reinforce these words at home!

Activity Ideas:

1) Write the words on index cards and practice them before bed.

2) Write the words on post-its and stick to places at home frequently visited by your child.

3) Have your child look at a word, take a picture in his/her mind, then spell the word back to you.  You may have your child write the word too to reinforce spelling.

4) Have your child write a sentence using the word.

5) Have your child write the word in the air (using "invisible ink").

6) Write the word on your child's back and have him/her spell the word as you write it.  You may take turns so your child has an additional opportunity to practice writing the word.

7) Make letter tiles (using pieces of paper or index cards or tagboard) and have your child construct the word using the tiles.

8) Play a game of memory with 5-10 words at a time.
