Welcome to science class! I am looking forward to an enjoyable and
successful year. During class you will be making many new discoveries and
learning why science is such an important part of our everyday lives. Science
affects our daily lives, our society. The food we drink the air we breathe,
the shelter we live in, all of these have to be perfect in order for us to
survive.
We have learned about the evolution of dinosaurs and other animals that came
before in prehistoric times, but there are animals today that are endangered
because of overfishing, over hunting or of climate changes that have affected
their habitats. Every change impacts our environment, our plants, our oceans,
our weather, and how we live.
Science permeates our lives and informs our actions. Physics, for example,
teaches us how mirrors work, how glasses can aid one's vision and how heat is
treated by various household materials (plates and utensils). Chemistry
discusses the principles of matter, like atoms, molecules and compounds. It
discusses the countless different substances that can arise from the smallest
variations within compounds. These atoms, molecules and compounds make up the
water we drink, the food we eat, the air we breathe, the medicines we take
when we are sick. Some we can't possibly live without.
Biology, the study of life, teaches us why we are the way we are, why we need
what we need to survive, how all living things are categorized, when we all
came from. These, and countless other questions and answers are all related to
science.
As you can see science is a part of you, your life, and your very survival.
It is extremely important that you learn to have a respect for the Earth and
all that inhabits it.
