What is AIS?

AIS stands for Academic Intervention Services. The course is subject specific
and provided to students who demonstrate need for additional help in a subject
area. This course is in addition to any other subject courses a student is
already taking.

How did I get placed in an AIS course?

The easiest way to answer this is to ask you to look at your score on last
year's State Testing. The highest score possible on the grades 7/8 math
tests was a 4. Students scoring a 1 or 2 are assumed to need additional
math help to achieve grade level work and are required by NY state to be
enrolled in an AIS class (or other intervention as appropriate). Also, a
student can be enrolled based on a teacher's or parent's recommendation
if there are available spots in the class.

How large are the AIS classes?

What is taught in AIS?

In Mrs. Mathers' AIS math classes, students will be presented with a lesson
each day, just as in any other math class. The lesson will be based on the
following criteria:
Areas of past difficulty that will need to be strengthened before continuing
in current line of study in regular math class.
Areas of current difficulty in current math class.
Pre-teaching of upcoming topics in the student's current math class.

How does Mrs. Mathers know what areas a student needs help in?

1. Analysis of previous state tests.
2. Student input (Please let Mrs. Mathers know when you are struggling!)
3. Teacher communication with a student's current (or past) math teacher.
