The monthly news will focus on providing monthly information about curriculum and scheduled events.

FEBRUARY
Math: Topic 10 will focus on the following concepts/skills: building 1,000, counting hundreds, tens and ones, reading and writing numbers to 1,000, changing numbers by hundreds and tens, patterns with numbers on hundreds charts, skip counting by 5, 10, 100 to 1,000, comparing numbers, and problem solving: look for a pattern.

**We are continuing to use the Scholastic Program, FASTT Math. The children are currently using this program to master their addition facts. Once the children master their addition facts, then they will be using the program to master subtraction facts. The children will be using this program three times a week or more depending on your child's progress.**
 

Fundations: Unit 10 overview: I will teach a new syllable type called the "D" syllable because it contains a double vowel combination. In this unit we will be working on ai and ay combination. Unit 11 overview: I will continue teaching the "D" syllable focusing on the long e sound. The three double vowel combinations for this unit are, ee, ea, and ey. With every unit, a unit overview letter will go home with your child. This letter will provide you with more information about the unit and includes  activities that you can complete with your child for additional reinforcement of the skills.

Shared Reading:
Our shared reading for the month will include reading stories that will support our ELA, Science and Social Studies curriculum. The shared reading will include: Scholastic News, Dental Health, Solar System, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Valentine's Day, and How to Books.
 

Guided Reading and Learning Centers: During Guided Reading instruction, the children will attend curriculum based learning centers. These centers will support the development of reading skills, comprehension skills, computer technology skills, writing skills and math skills. 
 

Language Arts: This month the children will be writing about: the solar system, our trip to Star Lab, presidents, Valentine's Day, dental health and reading response activities. Language Arts will also include the continued development of sentence writing, verbs, nouns, adjectives, spelling, contractions, synonyms, homophones, analogies,  proofreading skills, grammar and the mechanics of writing. 
 

Unit: Science/Social Studies: This month we will complete our science unit of the solar system. The children will review/learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will continue to use our workbook, People and Places Nearby. The children will continue to learn about people in our community that provide goods/services and the income he/she earns.

Character Education:
We are continuing with our Second Step program. This month's lessons will focus on: learning how to ask for help politely and patiently, how to join an activity at the right time in a friendly way, and exploring sportsmanship skills.
 

Star Student: When your child has been chosen as Star Student a letter and poster will go home on the Monday before he/she is Star Student for the week. Please make sure your child returns his/her poster the Monday of the week he/she is Star Student. Thank you for all your help!
