NOVEMBER 2009
Dear Parents,
Here we are at the end of the first marking period for the 2009-10 school
year. That means it is time for our annual Parent Teacher Conferences. These
conferences provide both the teacher and parent a wonderful opportunity to
discuss the progress of their child(ren). Parent Teacher Conferences help “set
the stage” for the rest of the school year.
Centennial News:
In October we held our first school-wide “Fascinating Facts” assembly. Each
class provided an interesting fact from the decade they are assigned to. The
facts for this month were centered on History.
Listed below were some of the Fascinating Facts:
1910: The first Father’s Day was in 1910.
1920: In 1929 the first telephone booths were used.
1930: The Empire State Building was completed and opened.
1940: Antarctica was discovered as a continent.
1950: In 1959 the microchip was invented thus paving the way for the future
of home computers.
1960: The first Super Bowl was played in 1967. The Green Bay Packers beat the
Kansas City Chief’s by the score of 35-10.
Bart Starr was the game’s MVP.
1970: In 1971 Disney opens in Orlando Florida
1980: November 11, 1982 the Vietnam Memorial was erected in Washington D.C.,
honoring soldiers who served our country during the Vietnam War.
1990: The World Wide Web started in 1992.
2000: In 2006, Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet.
Needless to say, I learned a great deal from the students. The facts listed
above were just a small sample of what was presented at that assembly. The
theme for November is “People.” There is Tree Map located in the Main Hallway
that displays these Fascinating Facts. If you are in the school stop by and
take a look.
During the month of November our Grade 5 students will be taking the New York
State Social Studies Assessment on Monday, November 16th (Part I) and Tuesday,
November 17th (Part II). Please make sure your child gets a good night sleep
and a hearty breakfast prior to taking this assessment.
Finally, November provides me an opportunity to reflect on how thankful I am
to be part of such a wonderful school. Thanks to you and your child(ren) for
making it that way.
