8th Grade Course Outline

Course Description:

This purpose of this course is to expand the students’ knowledge of the different disciplines of Middle School Health Education and able to demonstrate an understanding of the various health principles influencing society today. The class will consist of lectures, class discussions, videos, overhead transparencies, stations, current event articles, worksheets, various small group-work and a term paper.

I have attempted to design portions of this course to prepare students for the various pressures and trends that may be presented to them at the high school level.

Course Requirements:

Each student must complete the course requirements to obtain a passing grade:

            1. Notebook:  Necessary for this course

A neat, well developed and organized 3-ring binder. Include dated lecture notes and all handouts. It is recommended to use dividers in your 3-ring binder for easy access to sections.

            2. Homework/Preparation:        20-60 points each.

Homework is handed in on time and neat. Homework will be given occasionally and normally should take only 10-15 minutes each night. Readings should be done before the topic is discussed in class to insure active participation and better understanding of class discussions. Newspaper/magazine articles will be done for class and consist of one detailed paragraph describing a health related topic placed in your log book or journal.

            3. Quizzes:          10-25 points.

Quizzes may be given at any time, so be up to date on all assignments and readings. This is to insure that students are up to date on readings and class work.

            4. Tests:              30-100 points

Student must be present the day of the test or a pre-arrangement must be made.

            5. Attendance:    Various points for each class.

Each student is expected to be at every class, if a class is missed it is the responsibility of that student to obtain the work from a fellow student or see me personally. Please see me following your return from an absence so I may be able to inform you of topics covered during your absence. Students are expected to be to class on time and prepared for the learning process.

6. Behavior/Class Participation:     Deduct points from class participation points.
A positive, productive attitude and effort by each student to add to class discussion is necessary. It is expected that students will allow the learning process to take place for all students. Those not permitting this process to take place will be discussed with individually. Respect for the teacher and others is expected!

            7. Term Paper: 100 points

At the conclusion of this course we will be utilizing much time on a final term paper that the students will be working on diligently in the classroom, library and at home. We will discuss this more towards the end of the course.

“Friday Fitness Labs”:

New this year will be a Friday Fitness Lab. We will be utilizing the pool, weight room or class time to swim, exercise, complete class work or walk for our overall fitness level. Your intelligent input will also be considered for this portion.

Course Grading:

To figure out your grade throughout the year, each student must add the points earned and divide that amount from the total potential points for an overall grade.

The final grade for the course is determined by the students’ first quarter, second quarter and final exam grade totaled together and then divided by 300. Any questions please ask.
