Family University

What is Family University?

Family University (Family U) is a community-based organization made up of dedicated teachers, parents, students, counselors and other professionals. Family U believes that fostering effective parenting skills and enhancing communication among family members will help prevent the misuse of drugs and alcohol and encourage children to make positive choices.

Family U is a not-for-profit Corporation, established in 1994 following a town meeting when 300 members of the Katonah-Lewisboro School District gathered to address the large numbers of alcohol and drug-related accidents involving John Jay High School students.

Family U is a valuable resource that has impacted a growing number of parents and children. Its reach has expanded dramatically from 400 people in 1994 to over 6000 people today.

Students

In-School Programs for grades 1-12 on topics such as understanding differences, bullying, self-respect, and independent thinking.

Students and Parents
Annual Family U Night, an annual evening of workshops and professional guest speakers themed around important social and family matters.

Parents
Seminars and a book group for community members conducted through the Family University Education Network.

Family U is currently inactive awaiting new leadership and committed volunteers to move this organization forward. An interim grass roots KLSD-wide group has formed and has organized a community prevention event, "K-L Empowered" from 7-8:30pm on  March 28, 2017 at John Jay Middle School.  We encourage all KLSD parents to attend this program.
For more information or to lend your energy and talents to support these vital initatives, please contact JJHS parent, Janet Heneghan, at heneghan@optonline.net or KES parent, Jessica Knopke, at mailto:jknopke@gmail.com.  Thank you!
