Dear First Graders,
I hope you are enjoying the summer vacation! We certainly had a hot summer,
great for pools, water parks and slip and slides. I am sure you have so many
stories to share about what you did this summer and about Kindergarten. I
want to welcome you to our First Grade Class!
First grade is a wonderful year full of so many adventures. We learn to read,
write, take care of our stuff and treat others the way we want to be treated.
Math is a world full of numbers in which we learn to combine things together,
separate things, count things and lots of other types of math. We get to be
scientists, detectives, and solve lots of problems in science class. Mrs.
Peck's class and our class participate in science
together and sometimes reading groups, so you get to meet a lot of new
friends. I can not wait for all of us to get to know each other and start our
journey into first grade.
Let me tell you a little about myself. My name is Mrs. Mercado and my dream
to be a teacher started as a child. I went to school for a very long time to
be the best I can be. I learned many things before I decided to
be a teacher. I still go to school so I can learn new ways to teach my first
graders. I have many favorite books because I love to read
to the children in my class. When I read a new book it sometimes becomes my
favorite and I want to read it again and again. One of
my favorite authors is Robert Munsch. He wrote I Love You Forever and
Mortimer.
I love dogs, especially dachshunds. I had a miniature dachshund named Roxey.
She was very smart. She did a lot of tricks and loved to sit by the pool.
When someone swam in the pool Roxey would run around
the pool barking. She loved math. Bet you never knew a dog that could tell
time? When it was five, she would bark for her dinner or bang on the closet
where her food was kept.
During the weekends I spend a lot of time with my new grandson. His name is
Madyn and he is going to be one year old on Sept 17th. He
already loves to read picture books. His favorite video is Baby Einstein. His
favorite character is Mickey Mouse and of course his favorite song is the Hot
Dog Song. I will be talking about Madyn a lot.
Something I do not like to hear in the classroom are the words I can not.
Everyone can try and everyone learns differently, so in our class we do the
best we can. We all make mistakes and guess what, that is the way we learn.
Our classroom has many tools that can help us if we get stuck and there are
many people in the Kent Primary School building that can help us too.
Remember we are a TEAM! Together Everyone Achieves More Since we are a TEAM,
I expect that we all RESPECT each other and our
differences.
Do not forget to bring your summer reading homework into school.
Enclosed is a cutout of a child. Please create a picture of yourself using
anything you want. Try to use
your imagination and use things like markers, crayons, beads, feathers,
pictures, yarn, felt, anything but food. Put your name on one of the feet of
the cutout and return it to school on the first day in the envelope it came
in. Looking forward to seeing you and spending a fun filled first day with
you. I will wait outside the classroom for you. Do not forget to bring a
smile.
