Course Description:

The 7th grade math class is designed to help student’s think smarter. In order to achieve this goal there are three components addressed in the 7th grade math curriculum. These components include: Arithmetic Skills, Math Vocabulary and Problem Solving Skills.

Having strong skills in basic math facts of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are essential to understanding more complex math. Therefore, we will work to ensure that all students achieve mastery level skills. Students can expect regular math drills as well as friendly class competitions in these areas.

While much of math has to do with calculations, it is important that students know how to articulate their thoughts and ideas in writing. Being able to Explain work is equally as important as completing a problem. If you can explain HOW to solve problems, then you will be a smarter thinker. In order to help students become fluent in math we are emphasizing math vocabulary this year. Knowing the language of math will give students the tools they need to be able to read, write, talk about math.

Problem Solving is a way to think out problems in a logical fashion. This component teaches people to think for themselves. Students will be challenged to solve word problems and other types of math puzzles throughout the year.
